nice to see us getting some respect but I would not compare us to the Packers. They are on complete differnt level then we are.

But these 3 games against the Giants, Ravens, and Steelers will definitely tell us a lot about how good we actually are.

As long as Cully keeps getting better, I think the 49ers will match up fine. Rogers on Jennings is a good fit, Cully on James Jones, and then Spencer should be able to handle Nelson. Willis should do OK on Finley, but I think the 49ers would need to put a safety over the top of him because Willis can help contain TEs, but he doesn't shut them out of games.

It will just come down to individual matchups, the 49ers 3rd CB and maybe 4th CB cannot screw up, because that is who Rodgers and the Packers pick on to open up their better receivers. The secondary would have to be perfect, if this matchup happens, hopefully Donatell would have them as well coached as he did in that Tampa game.

Yep, I would think a similar game plan to what we did in Detroit would/could/should work.

These boys are averaging almost 35 points per game. You think the 49er offense can compete with that? I hope we get the chance to find out.

The way their D has been playing lately? Maybe.

That's slightly hyperbolic. Obviously we'll have to keep them somewhat in check. But they are not infallible in my book. If we can get pressure with four guys, and I think we can with Ray and Aldon in the lineup, I think we can slow them down at least. No doubt the offense must continue to improve, though.

Good point. I hope we get the chance to find out. Who knows what the 49er offense will look like come January which is when they would play if they do.

If the 49ers play their A-game on defense, the offense won't need to score 35 points. Just looking at the last 5 offenses that seemed unstoppable by numbers, they were all stopped by a top defense. In 1998, the Vikings and 49ers were tearing it up but the Vikings were #1 with 556 points, 34.8 points but both the high flying offenses of the 49ers and Vikings were taken out by the pounding running game and good defense of the Falcons.

The 1999 Rams were getting 32.9 points a game, but were slowed down and nearly beaten by the pounding running game and good defense of the Titans. Then in 2001 the Rams were the top offense again (31.4ppg), but this time they didn't squeak out a TD by an inch to win the SuperBowl against a top defense and a balanced attack of the Patriots.

The 2006 Colts were the 2nd best offense, and they did defeat the very good defense of the Bears.

The 2007 Patriots were unstoppable, literally, but they were shut down by the Giants top defense and pounding running attack.

I'm not saying it's guaranteed the 49ers will win, but history has proven time and time again that top offenses with not so great defenses lose more often than not in the playoffs when they face a more balanced team.

Fair enough. Again, I hope we get the chance to find out.

Plus, I agree with Braylon and what he said after the Redskins game. The 49ers have a lot of growth on offense still, 8 more weeks and the good fortune of staying healthy, the 49ers can start being the team who causes and seeks out mismatches too.

Edwards: 49ers offense 'not near what we can be'

Obviously the Packers would be favored but we do actually match up well with them. Everyone is hung up on out scoring the Packers but if you look deeper I don't think that's necessarily the case.

For starters The Packers D is in the bottom 10 when it comes to rushing YDS/A. That means it's possible to effectively run on them and control the clock. Which is vital because it keeps GB's offense off the field and limits scoring chances. Keeping with the limiting scoring chances theme we simply don't turn the ball over that much.

So offensively we might not win a shootout against them but we might not need to either.

Defensively the key for us is that we can generate pressure with just our front guys. This is vital because disrupts Rodgers while at the same time allowing us to commit guys to coverage and limit his options under pressure. This is actually how the Giants were able to beat the vaunted Patriots offense in 07 and even yesterday.

Really you can apply this same logic to the Saints also but even moreso since their run defense is flat out terrible and they are as explosive as the Packers.

GB using 3 WRs will put All Done on the field. I think we match up well with their O too. As long as Cully, Brown, and Goldson keep trending up.

I think we would be competitive against the Packers, we'll get to Rodgers a few times with our pass rush, and Gore will run all over the Packers.

But for some reason I just think somehow Rodgers would pull off a win at the end of the game, he's got a knack for that. He's done that so many times, so at least for me I just get that feeling that he'd also do it to the 49ers. :-)

I'm excited about playing the Giants in two weeks (but first we need to take care of Arizona!). Playing the Giants in two weeks is huge that might be for the 2nd seed.

The Giants game is HUGE.

The question isn't can the 49ers keep up, it's can the Packers score against a top defense, they've had a pretty easy schedule so far.

Packers Schedule
Team/rank pts allowed
NO/19th
CAR/28th
CHI/14th
DEN/31st
ATL/12th
STL/29th
MIN/25th
SD/27th

Here is an interesting one: GB gives up 299.6 pass yards per game. 2nd worst in the league.
