Twitter / Media is a buzz that Martin Perez has been called up to join the little Rangers...
Bullpen depth? Yu hurt? I've read it all the past hour or so....
And just b/c someone will ask for an article....
Reports: Rangers to call Martin Perez to majors; will report Tuesday | Texas Rangers Blog
According to Twitter accounts, believed to belong to Ranger prospect LHP Martin Perez and his agent Felix Olivo, the 21-year-old lefty is about to go from being the youngest player in Triple-A to the newest member of the Rangers’ pitching staff.
Ranger officials did not respond to requests for confirmation.
According to Olivo’s account (not verified), Perez was told Monday night and he will be with the Rangers on Tuesday. Olivo’s account also mentioned, in Spanish, that it was “possible” Perez could make his MLB debut on Tuesday. It’s not clear if Olivo meant that Perez would be replacing scheduled starter RHP Yu Darvish or if Perez would be available in the Rangers bullpen.
According to a translated version of Perez’s account:
“I was called to the big leagues.”
“Tomorrow I will be with the team.”
“God’s grace by this tremendous opportunity. Thanks to everyone who helped me and especially my parents.”
As of Monday, Perez was the scheduled starter for Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday against Iowa. The Rangers considered Perez when they called up RHP Justin Grimm last week, but thought Perez was still struggling to command his fastball. Since then, he’s rolled off two impressive starts. He pitched seven innings of one-hit shutout ball against Oklahoma City on June 15 and followed it up with a nine-inning complete-game three hitter. He is 5-5 with a 4.59 ERA for the season.
On Monday, Grimm allowed six runs in one-plus inning of his second start after beating Arizona last year.
