If Goodell gives a $2.4 billion franchise a $25k fine he will be crucified in the press. I believe the wording in the NFL rulebook says a $25k fine and whatever else they deem necessary. I may not have the wording exact but its something like that. The NFL left itself a ton of wiggle room to extend that penalty to whatever Goodell deems fits the crime. Given the press this has received I highly doubt a misdemeanor type slap is in the future for the Pats.

The NFL is dragging it out so they don't have to suspend anyone for the Superbowl. Once the game is behind them they'll say they officially "Concluded the investigation".

And more importantly, why do we really give a shit? Fine them and change the procedure for handling balls prior to games. I really don't see how this changes much. I don't see deflated balls being an advantage anyways
