Cody Parkey reaffirmed that he’s the best onside kick specialist in the NFL. While the biggest takeaway from the onside kick that tight end Daniel Brown recovered with 1:13 remaining in the fourth quarter probably was that a $95 million contract isn’t enough to convince Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to get dirty on the hands team, Parkey quietly has done something remarkable.
While acknowledging that successful onside kicks require a good deal of luck, Parkey has been freaky good when it comes to converting these things. Since the start of the 2017 season, all non-Parkey onside kicks are 11 for 91 (12.1 percent). In that same span, Parkey is 5 for 6. That’s right. Parkey was 4 for 5 last season with the Dolphins, with the four recoveries believed to be a single-season record. Three of those recoveries came late in games, but Parkey also converted an SOS — surprise onside — that he recovered himself.
Since Parkey entered the league in 2014, he is 6 for 10 on onside kicks, including one with the Browns in 2016, when current Bears special teams coordinator Chris Tabor was his coordinator.
Retired Colts punter Pat McAfee, who had a gift for onside kicks, is next best in that span at 4 for 7. Packers kicker Mason Crosby (3 for 12) is the only other player with more than two successful onside kicks in that time
