HAve to disagree. The BEST situation Carolina could get in the situation is a TD AND a 2 point conversion. Every second off the clock put more pressure on Carolina, Taking the timeouts assumed that they would score and tie it up. He showed faith in the defense to close out the game... and they did

There was nothing that Washington did to that point to make him believe that Carolina wouldn't score. In fact Carolina stopped themselves by turning to the run once they got to the one yard line and they got to the one yard line by throwing the ball. Our defense was keying on CM all day long after the first Qtr.

I do see your point because it played out that way but in the moment, Carolina was on the move.

Not to mention taking TOs lets the Panthers brainstorm for their best play.

That's taking a lot for granted!

With an 8 point lead, you make them burn their timeouts. Once they have, you defend against the deep ball, and keep everything on the field and make them play against you and the clock. Worst case, you end up in overtime if they score the TD and get the 2 pointer.

Nah he could have doubted the defense and used the timeouts trying to preserve time and thus give Carolina more time as well. I think he made the right call in not using the timeouts and letting the defense which was playing decently at that point close out the game.

Perhaps you are right as it worked out that way. Or, should the Panthers have scored, the offense would have needed more time to mount a drive. That is, if Simms didn't return one for another score, lol.

My logic was the Panthers would have needed to score and get a 2 point conversion.. and then it would have only forced overtime. Giving our rookie QB 1-1.5 minutes to mount a scoring drive on the road is a recipe for a sack/fumble or pick six that might eat into the kids confidence.. which he doesnt need at this point. Either the defense was going to hold, or we would go into OT.

Defense got it done in the end, the kid gets to say he started and won another game.

The defense DID step up in the end, and actually played well most of the game. Very proud of the effort yesterday. Do you recall any team playing this hard all 4 quarters under Gruden?

Loaded question. This year no. Last year, a few times. Gruden was a dead man walking short of the team coming out on fire. And I think he walked in the door with one hand tied behind his back in some areas from the moment he took the job.

Most of what you state is likely however, his approach lacked the necessary fortitude to lead others (men) thus, he is gone. Like you have said before, it really doesn't matter who is here as HC, as long as Danny is here, we are what we are.

MAny have said other coaches lacked the ability to lead a team. My thought is, if we go for the sexy option again we will get the same results as we have always gotten when we make the sexy coach/player signing. Callahan might be what we need, a guy who is going to stress a solid ground game and build off of that.

Any College coach we can sign is going to be about exciting airball, and personally i think we need another Marty minded coach. It might not be exciting in the throw it all over the place kind of football, but I would rather win boring and build the team, than losing in exciting fashion while we continue to play musical QB.
