Home in Boston, Pablo Sandoval Says Leaving San Francisco 'Not Hard at All' | Bleacher Report

Couple of excerpts from the article:

In other words...

"I showed no ability to stay in shape or be committed to my career, but they refused to pay my like a superstar with a long contract before my mediocre season and playoffs heroics. Now I will throw shit over the organization that brought me up, stood behind me and made me a household name."

Gotcha.

Way to ruin your legacy with the Giants and their fans, db...

Exactly. I'm trying not to be a bitter little bitch right now, but I really have an urge to rid this world of one more panda hat. MF'er.

I know I'm in the minority here but I've always thought Sandoval was a bit of a douche bag. This only furthers that opinion for me.

Can't believe he threw everyone but Bochy and Pence under the bus.

What a tool box. I always like Panda but now hope he fails miserably.

I mean... if he knew LAST SPRING that he wasn't going to stay on board, then WTF? That stinks of hot steaming piles of bullshit to me. And furthermore- his agent is a prick and everyone knows it so why would Sabean give that douche nozzle any respect?

Most agents are pricks I'm afraid. It's all about commission I guess.

Good riddance I say.

Interesting. A bit of a gut punch today for San Francisco.

I also read from Pavlovic today that the Giants offered him last Spring a 4 year, $75M contract with a vesting option for a 5th year bringing the total value to 5 yrs, $85M. After the 2 previous years and all the injury and weight concerns, sounds like the Giants still wanted him back pretty badly. Then in the offseason they were willing to go over $100M. I don't see the need for Pablo to come out and say this. If he really wanted to leave, then just stick to your original comments that "I wanted a new challenge". Instead, he's left a bad taste in Giant's fan's mouths and he'll probably get some boos in his return to SF.

I'm sure the clubhouse really doesn't care. If this is news to them, then none of them were probably friends anyway. I am curious to see if Sabes comes out and says anything though, particularly about his agent.

He won't. And he shouldn't. Sabes is too good for that.

Ultimately, I think we all agree that the best outcome happened for the Giants (Sandoval not signing a huge, long contract with the Giants). It leaves a hole in the lineup, but I trust Sabes to be able to either fill that hole, or fill another hole to keep the team-talent close to where it was. I like McGehee as a scrappy place-holder and I think we have a few infielders in the system who may be able to take the job in the next 2-3 years (Tomlinson, Arroyo, POSEY, Delfino, Duvall, Javier, Adrianza/Crawford, Duffy/Panik).

You're probably right about Sabes, but when a player/agent question your credibility it might be tempting to respond. Sabean isn't that type of guy though, he has more important things to worry about. It's probably safe to say any player represented by Gustavo Vasquez (Sandoval's agent) probably isn't coming to SF anytime soon. Sounds like this guy is a sleazeball anyway.

As for the future of the position, yeah probably best to save that money. I think it's Arroyo's position in a few years.

Hey, it's the Red Sox. If it were the Yankees he'd have to shave his beard too. It's a business even though fans and everyone else treat it like a sport.

I posted this on the "2015 Rosterbation" thread back in November :

5/90 is already almost an overpay, and the reason he is getting offers of 18/19M a year is because :

1) he's the best 3B available (in a poor class) this off-season
2) he was a very public monster in the post-season in both 2012 and 2014 (but just 'good' during the season)

Pence outplayed him all season, and last season as well (which actually surprised me, both years). Panda's only had a WAR over 3.5 twice, and half of his 'fullish' seasons (> 400 PAs) are under 3 (2.7, 2.1, 1.5). A WAR of 3 means he should be getting around $18M/yr.

I *almost* wish he'd accept Boston's offer (rumored to be 5/95) as he makes more sense in the AL with the DH as a possibility if he fattens up, BUT - (a) the Giants really have nobody to play at 3B and (b) he'd *rake* the Green Monster in Boston and it would make his departure hurt even more.

Panda signed means no other big name (or even 'good player') acquired this off-season (unless there is a late dumpster-dive possibility because a player didn't get the multi-year contract he thought he 'deserved', like Morse last year). So prob no Peavy and no big bopping LF.

So we ended up with Peavy, no Panda, no 'bopper' of a LFer AND a draft pick before round two. I can live with that. Especially after reading that article today.

I am a BIG fan of Arroyo. He may be closer than we all think, too, by the looks of him this spring. He struggled last year at the start, but he was battling some injury. When he healed from that, he put up monster numbers again.

DrB likes Delfino a lot. I trust Doc, but I tend to think Arroyo will be here too fast for Delfino to get a grip on the position.

Ummm, Arroyo has played only one game in his entire pro career at 3B; he i more of a SS/2B. I could see him taking over in a few years for either Crawford or Panik if his defense is good enough. Have the Giants made an announcement about moving him to 3B? Has he been playing there this ST?

Mitch Delfino on the other hand IS a 3B, having played all his pro career there (well, except one game).

I just don't see them being in competition for the same IF spot.

I am not as tied to position for minor leaguers as I am for major-leaguers. Panik was drafted as a SS and did not play 2B until rather late in his minor-league career. Sandoval played catcher almost exclusively in the minors.

That said, I can see Arroyo playing SS with Craw moving to 3B. Craw has a rocket for an arm and is a rather big guy, so his LONG TERM future may be at 3B anyway (IF his bat continues to develop).

Either way, my post was more about the number of players we have in the overall bucket of options.

SS -> 2B is a pretty common move, either because one is "blocked" by a SS in either the minors or majors, or it turns out he doesn't have either the arm or the range.

"Sandoval played catcher almost exclusively in the minors" is completely false, according to Pablo Sandoval Minor League Statistics & History | Baseball-Reference.com : 156 games at 1B, 105 at 3B and 176 at C in the minors is not "almost exclusively". In fact, he spent less than 50% of his time as a catcher (almost exactly 40%, in fact).

Yes, we have a couple of IFs in the minors who *might* be stars. I don't pay too much attention to minor leaguers until they start playing at AA or above, as so many "can't miss" future stars in A or A- ball disappoint once they make the jump to AA. And Arroyo *could* start playing more 3B to widen his options : super-util to begin with, then grab a starting position that is available by somebody going to FA or being traded. IF Arroyo has a great glove, I would see no problem with Crawford being traded in 2 years (if Arroyo is ready) for top prospects - Craw would be 1 year away from FA. Especially if the glove is "about the same" as Craw but Arroyo brought much better offense. That's a big "if", it's too early to tell. Or 4 years from now to replace Panik (with the same caveats).

Disappointed in Sandoval for talking some shit now he has left. Saying he only misses Bochy and Pence and no one else from a team that brought him 3 WS Championships was not cool. Well I guess this sets up a 2015 WS between Boston and SF and let the sparks fly. Talk about a hyped up WS. Wow !

Thank you for your time with Giants. Your heroics in the 2012 and 2014 World Series will not soon be forgotten, nor will your outsized (and oversized) persona.

Now, if you could do all Giants fans a huge favor and go sodomize yourself with a cactus.

Not a cactus, a grapefuit (he's no longer in the cactus league, he plays ST in the grapefruit league).

:drum:
