So in spikes on a professional track, Usain Bolt, the fastest man in the history of the world, crossed the 40 yard mark at 4.10 seconds.

Just a little perspective in the 40 time discussions in the offseason.

He was also in like 5th place at that time ( to be fair). I think they said Gatlin ran the first 40 in 4.01 which was the fastest time. It took Bolt 40 steps to cover 110 yards. Thats insane when you think about it. Almost 3 yards per step.

Interesting. I didn't know that.

Maybe they should have a 20 yard dash at the combine.

...By the way, if these guys were running at the combine, their times would be a little slower than their track & field times.

I'll confess, I haven't followed a second of the olympics. I heard this on the radio...

I wonder if Bolt was beat to the 40 yard line because he's 6'5. Were the other guys that tall? I wonder if his longer legs make it harder to accelerate, but they also give him higher top-end speed?

Supposedly he just has bad starts because his reaction time isnt as good as the other guys when it comes to the gun. LOL. Can you imagine the times he'd be running if he had GOOD starts?? Plus I think he ran a 4.1 the first 40 meters so that is actually about 44 yards not 40 :) Dude ran a 9.63 110 yards with the worst reaction time of all the other guys by about .05 seconds. Guy is a freak.

That is awesome, but it doesn't translate into football speed. But FUCK that is fast!!!

Ok, maybe I heard wrong then. I Heard he ran a 4.10 in the first 40 yards, not the first 40 meters. If I'm wrong about that, I'll have to get Ray or Clyde to edit the title of the thread. I'll double check...

First of all, I read your book, Candide, and I wasn't a huge fan. Just sayin'...

I think that would translate into football SPEED, but I don't think it would translate into good football PLAY (obviously). The fast guys who don't translate into good football speed are the ones who have good top end speed but not great acceleration. Either that, or they don't have good agility & initial burst (which is why the broad jump is a crucial combine measurement). Or they don't have the lower body / back strength to run fast in pads. Balance also has something to do with it, but not as much as burst when it comes to moving unabated.

Haha!! You are correct! - Insane said himself that his weakness is getting out of the blocks. When I heard this I thought the same thing - just how fast can this dude go with a fast start - 4.55? 4.50? 4.49 perhaps - Freak indeed!

Bolt topped out at 27.3 MPH. That's about 0.3 MPH faster than Michael Johnson.

Seriously? Because IIRC Donovan Bailey was a couple MPH faster than Johnson in 96.

I also heard Bolt topped out at something like 31 MPH. Was 27.3 his average speed?

Ok, this site says 27.794 MPH was his top speed:
Usain Bolt MPH in Top Speed

I think that one's right, because another site said his 2008 top speeed was 27.44 MPH. http://engineeringsport.co.uk/2012/06/21/how-fast-is-usain-bolt/

But his average speed was 23.35 MPH in the 100 M dash. Nobody can run 30+ MPH as far as I can tell.

Bailey's top speed, according to wikipedia (amazing research, I know) was 27.07 MPH. :canada: Only reason I compared him to Michael Johnson is because '96 is the last time I actually watched the olympics.

I'm not sure I believe that he ran a 4.10 40. Bolt has a terrible first 30 of his race, the last 70 is where he really gets going because of his stride. Justin Gatlin ran a 4.4 and he has a much better first third than Bolt. Also ran a 9.7 and got 3rd at the Olympics.

Well, they were running on a professional track. When did 'roid monkey Justin Gatlin run a 40 yard dash?

So there are some advantages and disadvantages in track times VS combine times.

Advantage track: Spikes and professional tracks VS football cleats.
Advantage Combine: They start the time on the first movement at the combine, not off a gun. Olympic sprinters usually have about .15 seconds of reaction time.

I think they took that into consideration with Bolt's 40 time. The same site I references said his 2008 40 time was, if you take away reaction time, 4.15. However, he hit the 40 yard mark, minus reaction time, in 2009 right around 4.0 seconds flat.

I'd love to see one of these olympic sprinters run the 40 at the combine in football cleats. That would get some good publicity. Maybe not as much as Rich Eisen running it, but it'd be interesting

When he was trying out for the NFL. He had tryouts with a few teams IIRC

So they would have to find a way to deduct time to make it a football 40, or just have him run a football 40 instead of a track 40.
