When he was trying out for the NFL. He had tryouts with a few teams IIRC

So the 4.4 was in a personal workout?

I'm sure he can run faster than that. It's really impossible to compare 40 times from 2 different days & locations. Even the olympics 40 time isn't an exact science. That's why I'd love to see how an olympic sprinter would do at the combine.

Yeah it was a pro day workout. He could possibly run faster, I'm not sure. It's said that RG3 supposedly has "world class speed" (which I think is thrown aroud too much) and he wasn't a whole lot faster than that.

I'm not sure these guys would do that great at the combine, they train specifically to run their events on a track, they aren't used to a grass surface or heavy cleats. Plus their start wouldn't be as great without blocks to push off of.

Debatable - but i can't see Johnson winning.. 200 meters?

Debatable? At 200m Johnson would get smoked. At 100m Johnson would get smoked. At 40 yards Johnson might have a chance.

Since all we can go off of is average speed/time measurements, Bolt would run the 40 in 3.52 seconds - compared to CJ's 4.24. Me thinks CJ doesn't know the difference between yards & meters.

That's a little unfair though if you're simply calculating Bolt's avg y/s and multiplying by 40. Bolt's second 50 will be faster than his first 50 since he has the running start. It throws off the projection.

I'm pretty sure Bolt would barely break 4.2, if he did at all. In fact, Chris Johnson might beat him in a 40 yard dash. I also think there are other sprinters who would beat Bolt in a 40 yard dash, as Bolt was in 5th place at 40 yards.

This is why I'd love to see one of these olympians do the 40.

Another reason that Bolt starts slow is because he doesn't want to false start and get DQed like he did at the World's last year.

You are 100% correct - Bolt's back 50 (or 60) would be faster in a 100 but his front 40 would be much faster in a 40 as he would not run a 40 with the same strategy he would run a 100. Plus, no way does CJ run a 4.24 with reaction time added.

Obviously, at some distance Johnson would be close to Bolt; however, just as you correctly outlined with the 200 & the 100, IMO, the 40 is still not a short enough distance if both are running 40's and including reaction time.

3.52? it takes bolt that long to get off the starting blocks...

I'd be pretty close to Bolt at the starting line before the start of the race (just like that joke where a guy bets everyone that he can predict the score of every game even before it starts (0-0)).
