Hey Jeff, tell the SportsHoopla folk I'm still alive. Just avoiding spoilers for the Olympics by staying off the internet for the most part. Be back next week. :)

Taped the gold medal women's soccer game. At the half, I have two points to mention.

- Hope Solo has held the ball for as many as ten seconds at a time.
- We should be playing with ten for the blatant handball in the box.

But the US is up 1-0. If this keeps up, I might start rooting for Japan.

This is easy: "Honey, this is why daddy always boos the refs when they come onto the field/ice/court. Not sometimes, or most of the time...BUT EVERY TIME THEY ARRIVE!"

Wait, Kenny's from Philly?

Whatever. I know some people are like, well, you'll get calls for you and against you, and that's true, but damned if it doesn't feel like we shouldn't have gold. The six seconds indirect in the semifinal with what, 10-15 minutes to play? And the non-call on the hand ball in the box (I would argue that that one should not have been just a PK but a red as well) 30 minutes in. You think the US would have gotten that second goal with only ten on the field? Or kept Japan off the board as long as they did? I don't.

Don't get me wrong, I like that the US got the gold in soccer. I just wish it felt more like they won it.

I hate to agree, as a very objective voice, but this current US squad for the better part of the past three years has been far tougher to root for than previous squads. I particularily don't like her or Solo. Wambach is essentially what Sidney Crosby was his first couple of years in the league.

I look at it from a parent's perspective. If I had a daughter (and I'm assuming I don't as father's days around here are relatively uneventful), then I wouldn't mind if she looked up to these stars as role models - nothing wrong with a strong positive female influence. But then she gets old enough to stop drinking the kool aid they feed you in the US regarding women's soccer and you realize, that while they are great players, they are not the most sportswomanlike. Sure, there's a fine line here, but it just seems to me like some on the US have crossed it. The US Women's team plays a men's style game - and it usually gets them the results.

At least when you have competent announcers, this bias isn't quite so painfully obvious - but when you have former players using the term "us" to describe the US team, then it is. I wouldn't want my daughter to have to come to this realization - that her sports idols are female Joey Bartons.

lol ... thats a classic!

Synchronized swimming is to the Summer Olympics like Figure Skating is to the Winter Games (as in bizarre (dare I say corrupt) judging).
