RICHLAND COUNTY: Former USC running back Kenny Miles shot | Crime | The State

RICHLAND COUNTY — Former USC running back Kenny Miles was shot Monday during a robbery attempt at an office park near Irmo, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said.

Sgt. Curtis Wilson with the Sheriff’s Department said the shooting occurred about 1 p.m. in the 100 block of Centrum Drive, in the parking area of an office park near Broad River Road and Interstate 26.

Wilson said Miles was shot in the upper body. No arrests have been made and no suspects have been identified.

Miles was transported by a private vehicle to Palmetto Health Richland, where he was in stable condition Monday evening.

Wilson said the shooting took place during an attempted robbery of Miles. Miles had a football ring, a watch and an undisclosed amount of cash on him at the time of the shooting. Nothing was taken, however.

University of South Carolina football players have received rings in recent years for their 2010 SEC East title and the team’s 11-win seasons in 2011 and 2012. Deputies did not know which ring Miles had with him.

South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier said Monday at 5 p.m. that he heard Miles “should be OK.”

Team physician Dr. Jeff “Guy told (head athletic trainer) Clint Haggard that he should be OK and was shot in the forearm,” Spurrier said. “(But) anytime you get shot, it’s pretty dang serious.”

On Monday evening, the university sports information office released a statement that said Miles "sustained a soft tissue injury from a gunshot wound in his forearm." There were no additional injuries. Guy said Miles is expected to be released from the hospital on Tuesday.

Miles had approached Spurrier last week about the possibility of being a graduate assistant with the team, and Spurrier said he would consider it next season.

“He has been a model student-athlete here,” Spurrier said.

Miles, a native of Lawrenceville, Ga., who now lives in Columbia, has worked in the office of S.C. Attorney General Alan Wilson since August as a support clerk, according to spokesman Mark Powell. In that role, Miles works in community outreach and youth mentoring. He also interned in the office for four months in early 2012.

Miles’ shooting led to an outpouring of support on social media. Martha Childress, the University of South Carolina freshman paralyzed by a stray bullet last month in Five Points, tweeted: “Y’all pray for Kenny Miles please. It’s time for things to change in the Columbia area.”

On the football field, Miles led USC in rushing in 2009 as a redshirt freshman with 117 carries for 626 yards. He played in all 13 games, starting seven.

Miles started six games as a senior in 2012 and was third on the team in rushing with 359 yards. He started the final four games of last season after star tailback Marcus Lattimore suffered a season-ending knee injury.

Miles finished his USC career with 1,342 yards rushing.

I used to work right across the street (Broad River Road) from that office complex. Sounds like he'll be alright. One lucky dude there.
