Cool story bro time:
I have a cousin who went to Key West to celebrate his college graduation, and stayed. Going on 20 years. Back in archaic times when we had to communicate via electronic mail, every time there was a Hurricane headed their way, he would send photos of their "preparations". They started with guys in flip-flops boarding up windows on a local bar. Then bringing all the booze from the local hotels to said bar, usually on a pallet. Then boarding up the door to the bar *from the inside*. Then they invariably would end with a dog in a hula skirt.

It's mostly the media hype though - they hype weather SO much these days. Scare you into feeling like you have to watch. Most people I know might buy a little water and a few snacks in case of power outages, but I don't think aside from the most dangerous areas your average person is that worried about it. I just think it will be a lot of rain and some wind will knock down some power lines. And some beach homes will get pummeled, but you have to expect that when buy a beach home.

My cousins went to my Aunt's beach house on Thursday and cleaned out everything valuable. Then back to My Cousin's house on the eastern shore (They are like 15 ft above sea level there) and gathered up all the important stuff out of the basement and stuck it upstairs. Tonight, they killed the main power to the house and are heading with my Aunt and Uncle to another Cousin's house in the foothills with a few coolers of food.

Simple enough.

While the above statement is true, it is because the water along California's coast is too cold to sustain a hurricane. Baja California, Mexico gets hit every once is a while. The last time a hurricane made it close to San Diego was 1854 but it never hit land. California gets waves and rain and maybe some wind but not enough to be a hurricane. I will take an earthquake every few years.
