Only thing I am really worried about is power going out. I lived here for 8 years without it ever going out but the last three it has gone out a lot.

I may fill up a pitcher or two of water to put in the 'fridge if it sounds like I will be hit hard. Probably (hopefully) wont need them but better safe than sorry.

Media hysteria is good for business. People tune in to the news if they think they are in danger if they don't. And if this storm misses (which I really think it will), think of all of the stuff people bought that they normally would not have. Plywood, generators, 15 gallons of water, etc. And I agree that it is a bit silly and there is a bit of an overreaction, but the truth is New York was not built to withstand hurricanes/earthquakes so when they do happen it is a bit of a problem. Just like how we laugh when people in the south freak out and have 80 car pile ups on their highways from an inch of snow.
