I don't follow baseball much anymore but have always questioned this. Too many violent collisions at the plate and the catcher should not be allowed to block the runner from safely crossing the plate. Sorry WW.

No need to apologize. I'm not going to turn on people for having a differing viewpoint.

IMO, this is one of the most exciting plays in baseball - and now poof, gone.

For the record, I'm with WW, I don't like this rule change. To steal a line from Boss, "If you don't like contact, go play tennis"

Edit: I'm a pretty big tennis fan, by the way (lol).

I'm with you on this one, WW. I don't really care much for baseball, but it seems like people are trying to take out anything and everything in sports that has to do with contact. Football will be reduced to the Pro Bowl in a few more years.

I guess players aren't aware that running full speed into another person could result in injuries? :noidea:

I bet you any amount of money, the next thing they will do, is make the warning track area an automatic double. This way, there will be no risk to the player running into the wall trying to catch the ball.

My point is if the catcher doesn't have the ball he shouldn't be allowed to block the plate. Maybe I should have clarified that. If he doesn't have the ball he shouldn't be allowed to block the plate, if a throw is coming or he has the ball then that's different.

Are you talking about if a player hits a HR, and the catcher still refuses to move because he's being a prick?

OK, OK, I fucked up, I just don't like it when they block the plate and the ball is no where near them. I really fucked up my first explanation. I hope this straightens my point up.

Would you prefer if we took a page from the Finns?

In other versions of baseball, like Finnish baseball, the runner is considered tagged and out in case of him/her still running to base (and not yet arriving there) and defending player holding the ball while touching the target base simultaneously. In this case no physical contact is necessary to avoid injuries and the base umpire will call the runner out by raising a sign with letter X and referee whistles twice. In Finnish baseball player who is called out is literally called either "dead" or "burned."

BAN THE DH! :D

Hahahaha, you know, I'd love that, but with the money tied up in DHs, it ain't going. That said, make the rules the same. So crazy to have different rules in the SAME LEAGUE. In baseball the whole NL/AL thing is far too overblown.

Oh I don't know...I always felt there was a need to separate the windshield that is the American League with the National League's buggy-bug type of play.
