BANNING THE MOST EXCITING PLAY IN BASEBALL?
Hitting someone in the face with whip cream?

BANNING THE MOST EXCITING PLAY IN BASEBALL?
I am seriously pissed off about this. SERIOUSLY PISSED OFF.
People won't like the comparison, but I played softball and was a catcher, and we couldn't truck people at the plate...and guess what, it didn't affect the game. So, in the interest of fewer injuries, I'm for this. I never liked that when the ball beat the player to the plate, the run was then based on if the baserunner could brutally remove the ball from the catcher's grasp.

There you go again showing how much you know about baseball. It's not whip cream, it's shaving cream!

Looks like I was caught way off base then.
In order to cut down even further on injuries, it should be mandatory that you cannot foul off a ball. Too many umpires and catchers get hit in the head resulting in temporary dizziness and sometimes even concussed. Furthermore, batters themselves will be protected from painful foul balls off their feet, ankles, legs, etc.
Sorry, Pixie - I know it's in your nature and profession to care about and for athletes but this shit has gone too far. Runners are trying to jar the ball loose, they are not trying to maim and injure.
With catchers at the plate, I'm more worried about knees than heads, though heads are at stake. I know that runners are trying to jar the ball loose, by hitting the guy as hard as they possibly can. If it were something that happened a lot, I'd understand it as part of the game, etc, but it's really not seen THAT often. Mostly because most runners are good enough to not go if they know the ball is gonna get there THAT early. It's not something I'd fight hard for though, I just won't miss it. I'm not doing a victory dance...that's reserved for a certain aspect of hockey.
Also, I'd much, much rather they do SOMETHING about intentionally beaning guys. That's idiotic. And incredibly dangerous. MLB pitchers have to have incredible control, but not much keeps you from hitting someone square in the back and square in the face.
In one minor league game I was at, there were 4 plays at the plate. It was one of the most memorable games I have ever seen and experienced. This rule would have made the game boring as fuck.
Doing something about intentionally beaning someone - that I could get along with. Banning collisions at the plate? That has nearly sent me into a rage.
It sounds to me that it's more of a ban of blocking the plate (also something I dealt with in softball, which I also hated because it was a disadvantage) than anything. You have to tag a guy, just like any other base. It never made much sense that home plate magically had different rules.
Bartolo Colon has signed a 2 year, 20 million dollar deal with the New York Mess.
Ban of blocking the plate how - by the catcher? Fielders aren't going to be allowed to protect their bases either?

Without the ball. You can't do that at the other bases either. Can't stand in front of the base without the ball.
By the rules of baseball, a runner has the right to an unobstructed path to a base. However, this right is not granted if the fielder guarding the base possesses the ball or is in the process of catching the ball.
The fielders guarding first through third base are unlikely to risk physical harm and will generally place themselves out of the path of the runner. The catcher guarding home plate, however, wears padding and a face mask and will frequently place his body as an obstacle between the runner and home plate. Since the runner does not have to worry about remaining on home plate, only tagging it, he will run at full speed in an effort to reach the final base. The speed of the runner combined with the fact that the catcher still has to tag him (unless the bases are loaded and the force play at home is still available) makes for a dramatic play.

That's also what I never understood. Why can't you just kill the guy at second base on a stolen base the same as if you are coming to home?
Good rule change. I always thought this one play was a bizarre aberration in the game.
