Exhibit A as to why the Pirates need to stick to the trade market essentially. FA market is screwed up beyond belief.

Rajai makes things happen when he gets on base, the thing is he isn't that great at getting on base.

That is precisely the discouraging conclusion at which I was forced to finally arrive.

We let Davis go years ago for basically nothing and it wasn't a bad move. Now he's making $5 million a year to probably be a fourth outfielder and pinch runner?

Absurd.

Yep. They have money to spend, but they're better off taking on salary in trades than spending $15M a year for Loney.

Amendment to my last post: I'd really like Loney. Since the beginning of the offseason he's the one I wanted the Pirates to target. He just wants 3/30. Luckily he hasn't been getting offers like that, so hopefully deters him to drop either the years or the money. I'm thinking if he's willing to go 2/20 or 2/22 or something the Pirates should do it. He'd be a big upgrade.

Unfortunately for us, he's an upgrade by being tremendously average.

A platoon between Loney and Sanchez would work, but Loney would be the offensively weaker half of it.

I'm still kind of interested in Adam Lind, and I know Neil's pursuing that sort of trade. Lind's a butcher at first, but he brings a good deal more offensively than Loney does.

And I'm also afraid Loney's ceiling is what he did in 2013. If that's the case, he likely wouldn't even play up to a 2/20 type of contract.

But that's the market, and I don't think we can rely on Lambo.

Lind was definitely the best option...but the asking price was Walker. Which is laughable. They may be comparable in value, but the Pirates aren't in a place to trade a middle IF. At all. I'm okay with Loney getting that money if it's limited years. I think it's similar to the Martin move. The difference being that Martin's value is in his defense and pitch framing, but Loney is great defensively. If he could perform as he did in 2013 I'd actually be thrilled. I just like the fact that his average was close to .300, .350 OBP, etc. He doesn't have a ton of power, but you have to pay big money for power these days.

I feel like I need to find a good Pirates board. I like SportsHoopla, but the Pirate fans on here are by far the ABSOLUTE most depressing, negative people on the planet. Nothing the front office does is good enough for them.

Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels both put on the trade block by Philly. I guess they are re-building.

I can think of a lot of teams that would want to add one of those guys to their starting rotation.

Dominic Brown also being dangled. They also said they're not willing to pay any of Hamels/Lee salaries in a trade, so I'm pretty sure the trades won't happen unless they throw in cash.

We'll see. No sport has teams spending scads of money quite like baseball. NEVER count out the Sox or Yanks making a move.

Pirates extend Morton, 3 years, $21 million.

Morton's the type of pitcher who likely gets about $10-12 million per on the open market. Darned good signing.

Good for both sides. Chuck with his injury history, and the Pirates keeping a solid #2/3 pitcher for a bargain.

What are the Mariners doing?

Signing Corey Hart, okay, now you have the RH half of a decent platoon at first.

Trading for Logan Morrison, though? Why? They already have Smoak, who is a better hitter now and has the higher ceiling. Smoak should be the LH half of that platoon. Morrison serves no purpose to them.

I think thats actually been their team slogan for the past 5 to 10 years

Corey Hart was a Jack Zduren (fuck it im not gonna try and spell his name - the gm guy) draft pick ... They werent happy with Smoak at times last year either (ie Ackley) ... Im sick of the NL guys coming over ... Everyone they sign reminds me of Jeff Cirillo

saw Steve Phillips say they might be looking at Jose Bautista ... David Prices agent said he would want to re-sign with any team that trades for him EXCEPT THE MARINERS so thats dead ... I see they are in on Hamels and Cliff Lee( - hey I remember you!)

but why are they looking at ace pitching when they have no outfielders who can produce ... they wanna lose more 2 - 1 games i guess

no rhyme or reason really :noidea:
