I agree, but what was the biggest difference in this start was seeing those secondary pitches. Incredible. That slider man. It's true that eventually guys catch on to the overuse of the fastball, but I think it's with complete intent that we haven't seen everything from the get go. His first game he won with basically JUST the fastball. Second game was more of the same, some breaking balls, but LAST night was the first time we really saw that nasty slider. It was tightly wound. Brilliant.

He's putting things together bit by bit. He needs to move the ball around a little more in his next start, throw a few first-pitch sliders for strikes, and try to gas a few guys with high heat. He started moving left and right across the plate last night, which is why his strikeouts went up, but he's still not changing their eye level. Everything's thigh-high. With his velocity, he can work at the letters, too. Once he starts doing that, and with some improved command and continued increasing of his slider and changeup use, the strikeouts will start rising, and we'll see him get through 7 or 8 innings.

I agree with all of that...but honestly, I think he let himself get rattled by the Pujols shot. Then getting nailed with a liner didn't help. If he doesn't let Pujols get to him mentally, I think he was going 8 last night. Another impressive fact: the kid is efficient. Crazy efficient. His pitch count has been beautiful.

The top ten doesn't even give a full representation. Our system isn't just top-loaded with high-pedigree talent. It's deep. Very deep. Our top 20-25 prospects could all appear in most teams' top 10s. It's really remarkable how strong our system is.

There was a scout who said the Pirates have the best minor league system in the league, and it's not even close.

Full on baseball time. I love baseball, but I miss having some other sports to watch too...and it's been like 10 hours. The worst part is the Pirates have two OFF days...and the All-Star break is soon. NOOOOO. NHL GMs, you better be on your game...I'll need some distraction.
