Gas was 16.9 a gal.
Bread was 5 cents a loaf.
My first new car, a 1964 Dodge Valiant, cost me $1,850.00.
My first house, that we had built in 1972, cost $37,500.00. It had 1,700 square feet of living space and was completely finished. My mortgage was $192.00 a month.
Our first computer had a 7 inch screen.
Saturday afternoon double feature at the movies was 10 cents.
Milkshakes cost 5 cents.
Bus fares were 5 cents.
I had two season tickets for the first five years of the Minnesota North Stars and they cost me $2.40 for each seat per game.
My first job in the printing trade paid me 28 cents an hour.
It cost 2 cents to mail a letter.

I remember when most kids in high school smoked cigarettes and it seemed like they all started smoking Larks. I wonder if they still make those, I haven't seen any.

Don't know if this was common practice in the late '70s/early '80s or not, but..

My high school had a 'smoking area', where the kids could light up during their lunch period. All that was required of them was a 'permission slip' from their parents, acknowledging that they knew that their kids smoked.

... Like nobody ever forged their parent's signatures on those! :D

yeah, we had a smoke pit in our highschool as well (Grad 88). I think you had to be in grade 10 or up, and it was teacher-supervised (to reduce wacky tabaccy on school grounds). I don't recall any permission slips, but I didn't smoke so don't know for sure.
In university, even though it was no-smoking by then, all of the test booklets still said "no smoking during exams" on the cover.

Yup, the high school I attended had a designated smoking room - No permission slips were needed (I didn't smoke, but my older sisters did).

/I still remember going to the neighborhood store on my bike to get my dad cigarettes, Dad would let me keep the change - Good times.

//Mom would yell at my dad

When I was a kid I spent a few weeks every summer staying with my aunt and uncle in Toronto and my aunt was always sending me over to the store...."Stevie, could you run over to Beckers and get me some cigarettes and milk"? It was like every day !!

We had a smoker pit in our school too. We used to lock the doors from inside when the temp got below freezing.

Good times.

They would chase when they got in, but gave up fast.

Ok lets see, I remember:

A candy bar being 5 cents, twinkies and such being 12 cents, gas being 32 cents, 50 cents got you into the movies on Saturday for a double feature, Coming home from school and my mom was watching the TV (the ones where you got off your ass to change the channel, adjust the volume, and adjust the rabbit ears) and there was a news helicopter following the ambulance bringing MLK to a Memphis hospital after he was fatally shot, Paragon Park in Hull Mass had the worlds largest roller coaster (it pales compared to today's coaster but was cool at the time), the impossible dream year of the Red Sox when Tony Conigliaro's career was basically ended after being hit in the left eye by a pitch, Orr was still a few years away from his first Stanley Cup championship, a new Mustang was under $2,000, and 60 cents got you a hamburger and fries at McDonalds.

I remember when a "tape" player was a reel to reel

I also remember following a crowd of people down to Main St. in Brockton Mass, where I grew up, and watching a Vietnam protest, when Sgt. Peppers came out, you could by a model and build it for under 75 cents, glue included, bought from saving my 25 cents a week allowance.
