They really aren't alone. But what angers me is how little punishment they received for "copy and pasting". If I did that in a project without giving credit I could potentially fail a class, and if multiple infractions occur I could be kicked out of school. Intellectual property exists, stealing it is a crime. Just because they're too big for their britches shouldn't equate to them getting away with crap.

This section of the article struck me as odd...

This helps explain why it seemed perfectly reasonable to a SportsCenter anchor to ask in-studio guest Liam Neeson whether Tim Tebow should be the Jets' starting quarterback even though Liam Neeson had no clue what he was talking about. This helps explain how ESPN wound up breaking Tim Tebow news to, yes, Tim Tebow.

The author kinda glosses over it, but what the hell is Liam Neeson doing on SportsCenter in the first place?

He linked a separate article on that one. He was in pumping Taken 2. He had no idea about anything NFL related, asked if they could start again on live SC, and cursed. There's a video, it's pretttty funny.

It just proves to me that in the TV ratings world, quality and ratings are not mutually exclusive, they are inversely proportional.

Generally, television journalism is pretty miserable. I try to get as little information from TV and radio as possible, but I'm pretty sure TV is by far the #1 source of news for most people these days. Troubling in a democracy where an educated populace is essential.

It's ok. We only live in a representative democracy - we elect those we want to make the tough decisions and continue to head down the road portratyed in Idiocracy - brought to you by Carl's Jr.

If I had ever done that for my small liberal arts college weekly newspaper when I wrote sports for them, I would have been kicked out. And it was a volunteer activity, a free newspaper, ungraded, and I was an editor. I can't believe some reporter at a major news provider could be allowed to get away with that and continue to get paid.

And the pity part is that they have a lot of very good journalists working for them. I mean really top notch investigators and writers. They just waste the talent.

I wasn't just limiting my comments to TV journalism, but television programming in general.

i have it in writing for pretty much every one of my classes...if we are caught plagiarizing, we are sent before the board of judicial affairs, and will likely be kicked out of the college.

Also very, very true. I thought the most revealing part was talking to one of their female reporters (was it Sam Steele? Regardless, it was someone I respected) about the debates they have in the newsroom. I imagine it's difficult for these guys that work very hard to get to ESPN (the pinnacle of sports journalism) just to find out it's a joke. Can you imagine working your way up to the top, then getting there and being told "Hey, we're doing a Tebow birthday party today!" I'd be nothing short of offended.

That's probably why many of the big names wind up leaving. Dan Patrick, Michele Beadle, Rich Eisen etc. I know Max Kellerman was constantly getting suspended when he had a show out here in New York, and his show was amazing. The problem is he was so, not what ESPN wanted. He wasn't the Mike and Mike style of idiotic sports radio. He had a segment called TFAG (Typical Football Analyst Guy) that basically mocked every robotic analyst ESPN trots out there. At ESPN you get punished for thinking outside the box.
