A lot of the controversy was definitely based on the trailer, which made it seem like it was a left-wing anti-Trump movie, so I'm presuming a lot of people didn't bother to see it.It's also possible that those people understood the satire and just didn't think it was all that clever?
I freely admit that I say this as someone who has not seen the movie in question, it's more a general comment.
But I also think anyone who came into it with a pre-bias was going to see only what they wanted to see from it anyhow.
And I also freely admit knowing that dark humo(u)r is very subjective and definitely not for everyone.
