I read that at least one of the two girls that died was killed when hit by a responding emergency vehicle.

Possibly both of them

Yeah, read the same although they're careful to say "not yet confirmed, but possibly so" or whatever. :L

What kind of irks me is the whole "let's-not-jump-to-conclusions-or-point-fingers-yet;we-don't-know-who's-at-fault-yet"... uhhh... I'm 100% sure it's the pilot(s) and was sure of it pretty much as soon as I saw the runway skid marks coming from where the runway hits the ocean -- and I don't know anything about planes other than the fact they magically fly me from point A to point B faster than a car/boat does.

And that story of the hospital in Quebec was chilling.

Just think about how fucking sad that is. They just survived a god damn plane crash then get hit by an emergency vehicle? OMG what a terrible scenario can you imagine how the driver must feel? We don't know exactly what happened but if it was me I swear I think I would want to die.

Per reports it is pointing that way came it too slow.

Asiana Flight 214 was traveling slower than recommended on landing - CNN.com

There there is this from the article:

Boeing 777s can land automatically, but it was unclear if the plane's computer was handling Saturday's attempted landing or if it was being done by the pilot, who Asiana said was making his first San Francisco landing at the controls of that model of aircraft.

I'm flying on Asiana out of LAX in under three weeks a 777 to Seoul and a 747 coming back. I'm hoping for different pilots than those in the ill fated flight 214 from Saturday.

Saw on the news that the communication between the pilot and co-pilot was almost zero in the final few minutes before the crash

It was a korean airline

Anybody ever read "outliers"

Malcolm Gladwell on Culture, Cockpit Communication and Plane Crashes - The Middle Seat Terminal - WSJ

Interesting. I read another of his books "What the Dog Saw" and thought it was fantastic. I didn't agree or love all of the articles but it is some very intersting outside the box reading.

Per the AP.

One of the Chinese teenagers who died in the Asiana Airlines disaster was struck by a fire truck while she was covered in foam that crews had sprayed to douse the fire aboard the plane, police said Friday.

It wasn't clear, however, whether 16-year-old Ye Meng Yuan was already dead or whether she was alive after the crash Saturday at San Francisco airport. Authorities were still trying to determine the cause of death.

Police officials confirmed that she was hit by the truck. She was on the ground and covered in the foam.

"When the fire truck repositioned itself to continue battling flames from the fuselage, the victim passenger was found in the tire track of the fire truck," police spokesman Albie Esparza said.

*************************************************************************

This story gives me the chills. Sounds a lot like the crash here in 2009. Not enough experience in the cock pit...

The pilot flying the plane, Lee Gang-kuk, 46, had nearly 10,000 hours of flying experience, but just 35 hours flying a Boeing 777. He had recently completed training that qualified him to fly passengers in the 777, and was about halfway through his post-qualification training. He was seated in the left cockpit pilot seat. In the co-pilot position was Lee Jeong-Min, an experienced captain who was supervising Lee Gang-kuk's training. It was Lee Gang-kuk's first time landing a 777 in San Francisco.

Read the rest of the story and it was an accident waiting to happen.

Given the information on what lead to the crash, it's clear its a DWA (Driving While Asian). I grew up in Hawaii so I've seen this alot.

Also the Asian driving instructor adds to the problem. :L

No offense to any of our good Asian posters/drivers on this board.

more to it than that boss

At this point, U.S. pilots would typically call for an aborted landing because the plane was more than 5 knots below its target speed, Collins said. But at no point in between 500 and 100 feet does the voice recorder show the pilots making any comment related to airspeed, Hersman said at a briefing Thursday.

in the book I quoted above the writer makes the point to point out that some ethnic cultures have a social norm to be deferential to perceived superiors. That they are not to question anyone in command or authority even if they are truly equals

in the san fran crash, it appears the co-pilot had more flying experience than the pilot but because he wasnt in the position of authority on this flight ... he didnt question the judgement of the pilot, even as the plane was going to crash

... the co-pilot didnt even act until mere seconds before the crash

in the book , outliers, they recount a columbian flight crew that was trying to land at LaGuardia (I think?)

Gladwell raises the notion that cultural traditions may play a role in plane crashes, that the 1990 crash of Avianca Flight 52 over Long Island, New York, might have had something to do with the pilots’ being Colombian. He quotes Suren Ratwatte, a veteran pilot involved in ”human factors” research, saying that ”no American pilot would put up with” being held up by air traffic control several times on its way to New York for more than an hour if he or she were running short of fuel.

the crew spoke good english and kept relaying to the air traffic control person that they were running out of fuel ... but the air traffic controller was very busy that night and got pissy with them and told them to shut the hell up (iirc) ... so they did ... they deferred because an american with a strong voice told them to zip it ... and they ended up crashing :L

Unreal that a station like KTVU would allow itself to broadcast something like that... even though they say it had been confirmed by a NTSB source in Washington, DC. :L

You really should know better...

Haha.. exactly.

What makes it even MORE inexcusable IMO is that you're a (mostly reputable, IIRC) local TV station... in an area where you have a pretty (relatively) high Asian population... so a lot of your viewers (hell, even employees) are Asian.

They were probably told they had a "scoop" or an "exclusive". It's not about being right, it's about being first.

I remember during a Hurricane once a local station in Baltimore was bragging about their "exclusive" coverage.

Ummm, no. It's a fucking Hurricane. A lot of people know about it. Starting five days ago. In Florida.
