"Nope, I have no interest in sports awards either. I also do not root for any actor or any movie I liked to win an award, honestly I don't usually even know if they are up for an award."

You just don't like awards. It's cool.

Thanks for your understanding.

I doubt most people who post here have seen a least two of the movies nominated for an Oscar and it's been that way for decades.

I have only seen one of the Best Pic noms. Of course, I typically only go to the theater for event movies (comic book, sci-fi)

The Oscars’ new ‘popular film’ category exists for popcorn movies, but undermines them

1. A three-hour Oscars telecast

We are committed to producing an entertaining show in three hours, delivering a more accessible Oscars for our viewers worldwide.

To honor all 24 award categories, we will present select categories live, in the Dolby Theatre, during commercial breaks (categories to be determined). The winning moments will then be edited and aired later in the broadcast.

2. New award category

We will create a new category for outstanding achievement in popular film. Eligibility requirements and other key details will be forthcoming.

3. Earlier airdate for 92nd Oscars

The date of the 92nd Oscars telecast will move to Sunday, February 9, 2020, from the previously announced February 23. The date change will not affect awards eligibility dates or the voting process.

For fans of the Oscars — those of us who gladly sit through three and a half hours of the hokey, glitzy praising of Oscar bait, indie gems and everything in between — the announcement elicits several layers of teeth-gnashing.

Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film is the next step in walling off the entertainment industry from critical thought. The new category panders to a straw man audience who might tune in to the Oscars if they see their movie finally represented. But the same way that the Academy deepened an artistic fissure between “quality film” and stories told in the animated medium when it established the Best Animated Film Oscar, so too does the Popular Film award divide and expel worthy candidates from earning the recognition they all deserve.

Ha ha, after getting a lot of public backlash, the Academy Awards announced today that they are "postponing" their new Best "Popular" Film category.

Movies need to be released in a movie theatre so that the general public can view them. It's fine that Netflix wants to make movies. Just release them into theatres.

1) Roma DID have a limited theatrical release.

2) How is a movie theater for general public while ?Netflix is not?

That said, I agree that Netflix should be considered “TV”.

Movies are for movie theatres. Releasing a movie on something like Netflix, which I've never seen BTW, is not what the future of the movie industry is about. I did see Roma at the movie theatre, and the only reason it was released was because the reviews were spectacular. I gave it a 4 out of 5. Very good, but certainly not great.
