Remember when Steve Spurrier in his first season as HC of the Washington Redskins blew out the 49ers in his first preseason game? Yeah, good times...

In 1991 the Redskins went 1-3 in preseason. I vaguely remember people in DC calling in on the radio and bitching about all of the problems & how the Redskins were going to have a bad season. They proceeded to beat the Lions 45-0 in the opener & the rest is history. I don't know how the Redskins will fare this season, but preseason - especially an opener - doesn't mean a whole lot.

they had radio back then ?

but seriously, I heard a segment on the radio last month of one of the OG team reporters from the 80s ....

back when there was like 5 guys who covered the team

he had some interesting stories.

i wish i could remember which show it was on so i could share the audio.

interesting to me how the team went from kicking ass, with 5 guys covering the team

to perennial losers with a million bloggers and credentialed reporters following their every move.

Yep. Different era. It was much easier to develop a team during that time due to the lack of a salary cap & more restrictive free agency. Of course the Redskins also had the major advantage of Gibbs I.

The media coverage is so much different now in the social media era. People actually found out about breaking news then in the morning paper or on the nightly news & would often wait days for this info. Today people are pissed if they don't find out about everything ASAP via Twitter, online, etc & the old school outlets are rapidly becoming a thing of the past. As you alluded to - every NFL team is now a huge commodity with tons of folks following their every move (& a lot of the coverage is via regular folks like all of us).

He fessed up and said he was joking so we can back off now.

OK Coach I admit it, you got me.

I think that everyone understands that now, and I don't think that any responses attacking him have been posted since shortly after Coach posted his follow-up reply.

Denver shutout Chicago 22-0. That's a blow-out.

My dad once told me the story of a writer covering the God Awful Redskins of the 60's. They had a punt returner, I think it was Ricky Harris, who was averaging under 1 yard per return. The beat writer correctly pointed out in his article that if Harris caught his next punt and fell flat on his face he would improve his average.

Heh. That's good stuff right there.

I haven't watched the game yet, its on DVR, but the only "low"lights ESPN showed was A) Davis dropping Colt's perfectly thrown teardrop in the end zone and B) the Falcons KO Ret TD where dude wasn't freakin touched.

True, Rickie Harris averaged 0.7 yards per return in 1970 his last year in Washington, prior to that he was an adequate punt and kick returner. He was also a DB.
