It sounds like such a Leaf thing to happen - of all the goalies Vancouver has unceremoniously dumped over the years, you wind up with the one that sucks while the other two fight it out for the Vezina.Hey now, enough disparaging of the legend of Eddie Lack.
Trade Talk: Phaneuf unlikely to lift no-trade protectionGoing off on a tangent here, but I'm normally pulling into the office just as Dreger gets on TSN Radio and I usually give it a listen because every now and then Bob McKenzie gives him something to talk about.
This morning, he talked about Phaneuf's charitable activities and how that makes him undeserving of the criticism he gets in Toronto. For ten minutes.
1) I really haven't heard anything approaching heated criticism of Phaneuf in months. Maybe a bad game or really noticeable mistake here and there but he's a candidate for most improved Leaf under Babcock and is on pace to hit 40 pts for the first time since 2012, so I have no idea what persuaded Dreger to choose now to build a (bad) argument about why Dion is a good player/captain/person.
2) As I said above, Dreger really only has any meat to share if Bobby Mac throws him some from the big boys table. It's gotten really noticeable how little he gets from GM's who aren't his cousin. I think the only "news" he's broken this season was an OHL trade.
Also, this tweet and what it was in response to instead of what it was supposed to be in response to, was hilarious:

Trade Talk: Phaneuf unlikely to lift no-trade protection
They put in some parts of the interview in the first tidbit, including this part regarding Dion lifting his NTC for a trade out of T.O:
"I think he thought it was inevitable that it was coming, that it was just a matter of the phone ringing. Newport calling or Brendan Shanahan saying 'we got this deal, would you consider?' I believe he absolutely would of. Until they hired Mike Babcock"
The Leafs hired Babcock on May 20. I highly doubt there was much chance of a trade happening before then considering a third of the league were still in the playoffs and the rest were still probably trying to figure out what their offseason plan was.
Leafs have $30 mil in space available this summer. Say they sign Kadri for $5.5m and Rielly for $4.5m, still leaves $20 mil to add Stamkos.I get the idea of not wanting to lift a No Trade. But Dion *has* to be smart enough to realize that not waiving it in that market is a foolish thing to do, doesn't he?
The fans already want to beat him senseless. If he refuses to waive and they miss out on Stamkos because of it?
They'll straight up kill him.
This'll be fun to watch.

They can also alleviate that more by trading Bozak, who's probably likelier to find a landing spot right now than Dion anyway, and that'll sub out for Rielly's money.
I'd still like to see Dion moved, but by the way he's played under a half-decent coach if the Leafs have to eat anything more than half a million a year of his contract I'd rather keep him. Crazy as it may sound now, the Leafs' blue line would be dangerously thin and young if they dealt him. Might make more sense to keep him around.
Right. Phaneuf for Tyutin, then. This would be remarkably similar to my feelings on Tyutin, provided he was actually playing well under this coach.

Burke on a mission to increase size of NHL ice surfaces
I thought the Flames had a breathalizer installed on Burke's phone that he needed to pass before making phone calls.
lol - I don't think it's such a bad idea, no two MLB baseball parks are alike, who decreed that all NHL ice surfaces have to be 200x85? I miss the old Boston Gahden and Chicago Stadium with the different ice dimensions. Nobody has to go to the wider ice surface (i.e. no retrofit), but if you are building a new arena, why not?
Today, larger ice. Tomorrow, baseball bats instead of hockey sticks.lol - I don't think it's such a bad idea, no two MLB baseball parks are alike, who decreed that all NHL ice surfaces have to be 200x85?
