Seems the Flyers got their hands on a few boxes of jersey numbers from Pittsburgh.

I'll be seen as biased, but these are just atrocious. Just when I thought the league had purged itself of vegas gold/khaki. Also, orange and gold are never compatible.

I just looked it up. It is 16.

It was just raised from 14 in 2008.

Legal drinking age is 18.
Drinking age is 19.
In no way should this be construed as me defending Ben Johnson, but the bar should also be in trouble for allowing a 16 year old into their establishment.
Party pooper.

Stamkos steals the puck from Eberle, rushes end to end and gets robbed by Jones.

In 2000.

On the plus side, Torts' insistence on using JJ on the top pair and therefore forcing their 3 good young d-men onto the bottom 4 will likely result in the Jackets being a top contender for Patrick.

Of course, at this rate the team might start bleeding money so badly they could wind up in Quebec City by the time any of that pays dividends.

Why? Because I have both of them on my team? The meathead player and the coach who loves the way the meathead plays?

Or are you just sorry that Tortellini said it?

They won't be bleeding money so bad for a while. Yeah, they pay a ton in salary, but they play in the arena for $1 a year, Nationwide pays a boatload of money every year for the name, and the city makes tax on concessions and all parking revenue (for every event - arena, baseball stadium, 2 concert venues) meaning the team doesn't have so much of a burden. The deal was for 30 years, with the pure intention of keeping the team put.

Granted, it may be that long before they are good.

Someone posted somewhere else that NHL 17s rankings of the Jackets D had Johnson, Savard and Jones all the same, 87.

If arena ownership is considered a burden rather than a benefit, that's pretty concerning. When the Panthers sold one of the pluses was considered to be the arena was included in the deal.

Anyway, if that helps them then good but there are only so many seasons teams can post attendance averages of sub-15,000 and remain afloat. It's kind of a credit to the fans there that they can even average that many considering the team's lack of competitiveness.

All of the above. That you have to deal with a coach who says something so freaking stupid.

BB&T Center is owned by Broward County, not by the team, so I'm not sure what you're referring to.

But from a broader perspective, I think ownership can be a benefit or a burden, depending on specifics. A place like BB&T, Nationwide, KeyBank Center, etc. that have only a single tenant and don't host a ton of non-hockey events, owning the arena can definitely be a burden.

On the other hand, if you're owning a place like Staples Center (the extreme example, I know), ownership is clearly a benefit because you've got two other major tenants paying rent plus events virtually every other night of the year.

Hell, it wasn't that long ago that owning the arena was seen as a burden for the Habs because of the taxes they were paying on it.

I had remembered around the time of the sale reading an article that said the arena might've been the real prize for Viola; there must've been something else in the piece regarding him still needing to purchase it in order for that to be true lol. My bad.

Guess I never thought of it that way. It's almost as if cities would be better served using that good land for something that actually benefits the public rather than subsidising sports teams...

/Had to look up "KeyBank Center". Is Buffalo trying to compete with Philly and Boston for most arena name changes?

I can't speak to a lot of the situations, but at least in Buffalo's case, I think the argument could definitely be made that this wasn't really good land that they were giving up and there has definitely been a benefit to the city from it being there.

No doubt others are a huge money-suck for the city involved.

/All of those name changes had to do with the associated company being partially/fully acquired by the subsequent named company.

So did Philly's and Boston's but it's still just as funny.

Boston's takes the cake for two banks bidding against each other for the original naming rights only for the two banks to have been in secret (and eventually successful) merger talks while the bidding was ongoing, meaning the two banks were in effect bidding against themselves to the benefit of the arena owner.

Not as bad as some of the others out there. Maybe not so much in hockey, but the two that come to mind are Candlestick/3com/Monster/whatever-the-hell-else and Joe Robbie/Pro Player (x2)/Dolphin(s) (<--apparently an important distinction)/Land Shark/Sun Life/Hard Rock

Crosby leads list of Top 300 projected scorers

Phil Kessel drops from 3rd in last year's list to 28th in this year's.

Funny thing is, with the way the Pens played after the coaching change Kessel being a top 5 point-getter isn't totally out of the question for me.

McJesus #2 behind Crosby - I see lots of solo rushes because there's no way Milan 'The Lummox' Lucic will be able to keep pace with Connor the speed merchant.

Yeah but he won't have to worry about getting injured by Taylor Hall in practice anymore.

barring injury, I think Sedins & Eriksson will each have 10 points more than Cullen predicts :noidea:
