Did they though? Remember what I said about looking at isolated seasons (or playoff series). The Sharks had a better overall W% under McLellan than they did last year under deBoer, no? And from the looks of it it seems like that remains the case if you use pretty much any chunk of his time in San Jose save isolating that last season.

If Nashville shows up for game 7 isn't the narrative about the Sharks right now pretty much the same rather than "they have improved so much"?
Scored more goals and had a better goal differential (they had a negative GD in Todd's final year there). Lots changed on that team.

The positive things seen on SJ would still ring true even if they had lost a game 7 in the second round.

Corsi in all situations was virtually unchanged (slight decrease actually).

No, but i'm not the one seemingly arguing that the team that won the Western Conference wasn't better coached than the one that missed the playoffs entirely 12 months earlier.

I think the argument I was making initially was that evaluating a coach over a single season is more complicated than just looking at wins and losses.

But to ask a question along the same lines... since the Sharks had 111 points under McClellan in the season prior to the one where they missed the playoffs, are you similarly arguing that he was a good coach who suddenly became a bad one 2 years ago?

Wasn't that the year he coached his team to a 3-0 first round playoff series lead before losing the series 4-3?

Yep, that's the one. I read earlier in this thread about what a big boost a #1 defenseman can be, which makes me think that losing Vlasic might have been a negative factor there. But even if it wasn't, Jack Adams himself lost 4 straight games to lose a series once.

Jack Adams also won the Cup the very next season.

Just to check, I hope I'm not getting too snarky with this. I worry sometimes because we both have that tendency but we also both seem to be cool with it and it doesn't generally seem to unrail our discussions. I like the back and forth that we have here, and I like and respect you.

Likewise, plus it gives me something to do when I accidentally sleep all afternoon and then can't sleep at night :suds:

Hahaha the thing that sucks about that is that you can't really get back on a normal sleeping schedule without sacrificing awake time in the big picture.

It's brutal. Luckily it's Friday and I can get a course correction in on the weekend.

Make sure you get it. I have been tired (like I'm talking actively feeling every minute like I need sleep) for over a week now, you don't want to fall into that trap.

I wonder why the Flames always got stuck with the lesser brother...

Devils - Scott Niedermayer, Flames - Rob Niedermayer
Canucks - Pavel Bure, Flames - Val Bure
