There is a parent of a daughter who belongs to the same gymnastics club as my daughter. I guess this guy used to be a professional skier. Anyway, he told my wife that he tells his 10 year old daughter to trash talk other gymnasts at competitions :L

The bar is moving ... society isnt what it was 8 to 10 years ago when a shitload of stuff could be said on the ice and no-one turned to twitter to expose it

what burrows said was horseshit ... what 5 players said to Theo Fleury during the latter stages of his career on ice about getting abused by Graham James was too

Agreed. I'm sure Burrows is not alone. My issues are:

1) I don't think he's stopped this kind of shit. Given what he's been through I just don't see Tootoo making something like that up.

2) The whole "anything to stay in the league" thing is such bullshit. Do coaches really hand out spots to guys who mock child abuse? It's a fucking cop out. Burrows made it to the league because he played hard and was annoying, not offensive.

Ohh FFS.

Tell your daughter to throw this one back in that girl's face.

You know the difference between your mother and a washing machine??

A washing machine doesn't follow Papa-dash around for 3 weeks after he dumps a load in it.

It really is quite a story how this guy was essentially plucked out of the ECHL and went on to have 4 20+ goal seasons (including a 35 goal season) in the NHL. I'm sure he heard some pretty disgusting things when he played in the ECHL. It's too bad he didn't realize that type of garbage needs to stay in the ECHL.

Well ... Up until a couple of years ago (or less) they handed out spots to guys who were just there to fight ... i know i know ... thats the good part of the code ... defend the star blah blah blah

it was a dont ask dont tell league ... going back to Fleury, people in the hockey world knew what Graham James did to him (and nothing happened to Graham James which is more heinous to me), guys trash talked him about it before it became public

and on the tootoo thing ... i dont think you can assume jack shit about what was said ... (gonna re-hash this too i guess) Tootoo made those comments post game when there was murmuring that he himself might be facing a suspension for leaving the bench to get into a fight

the moral outrage always cracks me up ... like this type of talk on ice is new OR THE NEW WORST THING EVER!!!!

Let’s jump in the way-back machine and set the date for the spring of 1990.

The Edmonton Oilers have just come back from a three-games-to-one deficit to beat the Winnipeg Jets in the first round of the NHL playoffs. Entering the Oilers’ dressing room we find a jovial group of players, save for one corner where centre Craig MacTavish is doing a slow burn. MacTavish, without much prompting, says that during the series, Jets centre Doug Evans had brought up the circumstances under which the Oiler came to Edmonton.

In 1984, MacTavish, then with Boston, pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide for his part in a car accident that claimed the life of a 26-year-old woman. He was sentenced to a year in prison before signing with the Oilers.

Reporters then dutifully marched over to Evans for his version of the events. Evans didn’t deny MacTavish’s accusations but he wondered aloud what all the fuss was about.

“I was just trying to get an edge and help my team win,” he said.

My father taught me to always carry a drop gun when I was 10.

Not to say what Evans said to MacTavish isn't deplorable, but the main difference in my opinion is what Evans said to MacTavish was a one-time event that MacTavish had complete control over (i.e. MacTavish was an adult and thus responsible/accountable for making good/bad decisions). Quite different from the O'Sullivan and Fleury situations where you are mocking a player for being abused (physically/mentally/sexually) when they are a child.

1. I never said this the NEW worst thing ever. It's just fucking bad, whether the asshole in question plays for the Canucks or the Senators or any other team, or whether he played in 1970, 1985 or 2015. It's fucking bush league. And the fact that others have done it does NOTHING to absolve Burrows from being a piece of human garbage.

2. Trash talking a guy (Mac-T) for committing a criminal act as an adult is pushing it. In this case I'd say it's maybe a little over the line. It's a far fucking cry from making fun of a guy who was victim to chronic child abuse starting when he was 5 years old. I really don't see the comparison. At all.

i honestly wont put gradations on it ... Im not gonna say this is worse than that or that isnt worse than that ... its all bad stuff and it all effects people differently depending on that persons personal experience ... and it happens ... ideally all trash talking would be penalized i guess? :noidea:

I miss the old days when you would make fun of a guy's clothes or a recent haircut or his funny nose or the car he drives...

Yeah really, it didnt even matter whether the haircut looked good or awful. When someone showed up at school with a new haircut it was game on!

lol - Good old boring Sean Monahan, not a great quote, but as long as he can record another 30+ goal season, it's all good.
