Toronto not giving up this year's 3rd rounder means they would have to negotiate with Detroit or NJ to get next year's back or come to some other solution with those teams if they intend to offer sheet an RFA this summer.

True, but I would think Toronto might want to have that option next year, once they've seen how the rebuild is progressing. :noidea:

I think the only RFA they would even consider offer sheeting is Seth Jones and so long as they don't think they'll be a bottom 2 team next year it is 100% worth offer sheeting him, especially considering the number of picks the Leafs will still have for next year's draft. Jones would fill one of the 2 biggest remaining needs on this young roster and could be controllable for 7 years if they really want.

It would also make for good entertainment on whether or not Columbus match (I think they would have to but who knows with that lot) and completely pulverize their cap situation.

I would assume that any offer worthwhile (meaning C-Bus wouldn't match) for Jones would not involve anything but 1st rounders though.

Although it might just be as simple as the Leaves being confident they'll finish better next year. Or they just see the value in getting prospects into their system one year earlier.

Pretty much.

Like I said at the end though, probably a doubtful scenario anyway because despite how utterly incompetent Blue Jackets' management looks at this point after their moves of the past 2 years, they would look pathetic if they lost Jones to an offer sheet or had to trade him after trading a 1C (by every team but theirs' logic) to get him. I couldn't see the Leafs offer sheeting Barrie or Trouba or Vatanen.

If I were the Leaves I'd go after Barrie, either by offer sheet or trade.

Writer at PPP did a pretty good analysis of Barrie:

Tyson Barrie has some of the worst Corsi numbers in the NHL

I agree with him that there are serious questions about how well Barrie would adjust to playing for a team not run by a crazy man with Cup rings in his ears. I'd take him, but I think with teams like Edmonton out there dangling 4th overall in a deep draft prices on guys like Barrie might be more than I'd like to see my team pay for him. I also agree with the writer that his contract ask will be $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ + a Hawaiian island.

What about the Oilers offer sheeting Barrie?

Some fair points for sure. Trouba would be the one I would really want but I don't think there is any way that Winnipeg would let him go.

Man, the more I look at their team and assets Winnipeg's future looks bright as balls.

Once they get their goaltending solved they should be set for a long time. Took a while but it might just be worth it.

Forgiving? Did Phil Kessel do something to me that I should be holding against him?

You're missing the point entirely or you're trying to be funny. My point is how any Leafs fan could possibly be okay with the decisions made by the organization regarding how they went about building their team at the time is beyond me.

The only person in this city who I think would be "ticked off" by Kessel winning the Cup is Steve Simmons. Got nothing at all against the guy - wasn't his or really any player's fault that the team was stinky garbage for a decade. Inept management doesn't reflect on the players, particularly a player who did nothing but what was expected of him during his time here.

They have the #1 prospect pool in the league. Acquiring Dano & a 1st round pick for Ladd was a nice bonus.

Hindsight being 20/20, I wish they'd sent Atkinson in that trade and not Dano.

It's tough. Every team has made bad trades though.

It wasn't in any way a *bad* trade. But considering that the Jackets are probably going to have to move Atkinson anyway (unless they can get rid of Clarkson and Johnson), and he's got maybe 3-5 good years left in him when Dano hasn't even started to reach his potential...

Then again, without Atkinson this year, the team scores 30 less. Not sure Dano would have made that difference up yet.

There are no issues with the Carolina Hurricanes - What say you, Bill Daly?
