Randy Carlyle = Cup = good coach
The Ducks didn't fire a coach in close proximity of Randy winning a Cup. False equivalency on many levels.

More apt would be Sharks fire Todd, Hire Pete, make Cup. Or Pens fire whatever that guy's name was/Therrien, hire Sully/Disco, make/win Cup. Or Kings fire whoever, hire Duhryl, win due Cuppi.

This is the shit writers gag on.

I'm far from "sure" that it did. Of course, I'm also not sure that it didn't.
I don't believe having a good captain is the end-all-be-all, but I do believe that it can take a good team and give them a little more.

I also know that if you remove the Kings from the equation it has been quite some time since a team won a Cup with a dipshit wearing the C.

Sure, and I'd be inclined to agree with that. What I'm saying here is that I have no idea whether or not anything like that actually happened in Vancouver, San Jose erc.

You don't think that this is even a little bit circular though? If a guy captains a team to a Cup he pretty much automatically unlocks "Natural Born Leader Praise" and no one will ever suggest that he could ever be a bad captain.

"They won the Stanley Cup because captain X is a great leader!"

"How do we know X is a great leader?"

"Duh! He captained them to the Stanley Cup!"

I mean, going back from 1974 to 2008 all but 4 Cup-winning captains are in the HHOF. It's a pretty representative position.

There was some talk that the assistants might walk because of the lack of job security. Guess Muller won't be one of them.

Sure, but do you think they're in the Hall of Fame more because they were good hockey players or because they were good captains?

Makes you wonder if Hitch would have retired this season if the Blues would have gone on to win the Cup.

No doubt in my mind.

Feels to me that in Today's NHL the role of the captain is primarily to be the guy the team looks to in adversity. You want your team to try and emulate the guy with the C (and to a degree the As) when the shit hits the fan.

The biggest mistake is when you just pin the C on your best player regardless of if they want or desire it. See Lindros in Philly, Nash in Columbus. Neither guy wanted it and cracked and ruined the chances of moderately good teams because they folded under pressure.

Pavelski is exactly the guy I want my team emulating and looking to in battle. Thornton is too moody and Marleau is a bit of a whiner.

I think Dustin Brown is just an asshole (if you can imagine) and Sutter just wants more of a different attitude in his lineup.

They're all great leaders because they've won a cup though. I'd kind of argue that Dustin Brown has always been a dipshit.

Messier was such a great leader that all the teams he played for in his last 7 seasons missed the playoffs.

If Messier was not a great leader then how come he has a leadership award named after him?

Exactly. To me it's all about the core group that you have. If they do their job and act like pros then your team should not have issues. If you have a core of the Kanes, Alex Kovalev and Mike Richards it doesn't matter if your captain is Henri Richard and Steve Yzerman's love child...you have leadership issues.
