Also, Captain of an NHL team means nothing in this day and age, especially in a place like LA (perhaps in crazy media centers it does). If anyone thinks that multi-millionaires with egos the size of Spain are going to knuckle under because some guy has a letter stitched on his jersey they've got another thing coming.

It's way more important to have a core group of hard-working, respected players that will make slackers feel excluded than it does to have a "great captain".

With that in mind either:

1)Brown did something really stupid and this is just symbolic, allowing the management of the Kings to retain some credibility (almost said that with a straight face), or

2)Some dumbass thought that this would shake things up and make the Kings play better immediately.

It's mostly symbolic, and I think it's something guys can rally around...but if it takes something like that then maybe there's simply a motivational issue to begin with.

Call the Avs every day, twenty times a day, if this is their philosophy...
I know I've spoke about Sweeney and Benning, but go right at the Avs too. I think the draft should be mighty interesting.

Worth noting that the first year the Sharks ripped the C off of Thornton they made the Finals after being the league's biggest underachievers for 15 years. Ditto for Vancouver when they pulled it off Luongo. Not saying that's the only reason those teams made the Final but I'm sure it played a part.

If Colorado thinks Barrie is just a #5 defensemen then that franchise is doomed to fail. Got to think he'll be traded this offseason.

Also worth noting that San Jose stripped Marleau of the captaincy 7 years ago and have had many epic failures since.

On the flip side Dustin Brown has won 2 Cups as captain and is being, IMO, overly publicly stripped of his captaincy. He must be a terrible captain.

Oh and Thornton was stripped last year. Not this year.

Went through a season without a captain though and missed the playoffs. Now with new cappy they're in the Final.

So, bad captain = rough times. No captain = terrible times. Good captain = Cup. Unless you're LA. Rules don't apply there.

Sounds like Hitch is sticking with the Blues on another one year deal. Former announcement could come later today.

I'm far from "sure" that it did. Of course, I'm also not sure that it didn't.
