Sens hire Guy Boucher

Not who I wanted but oh well.

On the surface he ticks all the marks.

Defensive coach.

Special teams specialist.

Youngish.

But something about this guy bothers me. I guess he could become this Sens version of Jacques Martin. Turns them into a good team but never gets them over the hump. The Sens really need defensive structure and I guess Boucher will provide that. I would have way preferred Mike Yeo though.

It's kinds funny that Marc Crawford provided analysis of the Guy Boucher trap on TSN back in 2011 when that occurred.

LOL. Boucher laughed about that at his press conference today. Said things are always evolving. He actually came across as really smart and prepared today. It definitely made me more upbeat about the hire. During his 3 years as Lightning coach Boucher's team had the 4th best Goals/60 at even strength. He's not JUST a trap guy apparently.

I actually like the role that Crawford will have working with the farm team. I want the team to have a similar system and practice format as the farm team. Crawford should be able to get that across. I would have been pissed if Crawford was the head coach but I'm OK with this.

As I said, I would have preferred Yeo (Not really upset at missing out on Boudreau) but Boucher might be alright. After all he took a team to the ECF that had the following defense core (listed by games played):

Brett Clark (age 33)
Victor Hedman (age 19)
Pavel Kubina (age 33)
Mattias Ohlund (age 33)
Mike Lundin (LOL, age 25)
Randy Jones (age 29)
Eric Brewer (age 31)

and goalies:

Dwayne Roloson (age 40)
Dan Ellis (Age 30)
Mike Smith (age 28)

That is seriously ugly. Based on that I'm willing to give him a chance.

I can almost guarantee that Boudreau was Melnyk's first choice. He's an attention whore and BB was the most famous guy available.

That being said I would not be the least bit surprised if Pierre Dorion preferred Boucher. He's a thinking type of hockey guy and Boucher seems the same.

However it happened I'm kinda glad we didn't end up with Boudreau. He's always had uber-talented NHL teams and failed to get them over the hump (yeah his goalies always shit the bed in game 7s but maybe try winning in less than 7). I don't think he'd be the best for a young Senators team.

Surprised Gudbranson didn't hold out for a long-term deal. He may regret that:

While I'm certainly not saying that Gudbranson is a piece of shit I do suspect that playing with Campbell this year helped those numbers. I don't have time right now to look at it in any detail but I will later.

I think with the expansion draft looming on the horizon, we might be seeing more of these 1 year deals to give GMs a better idea of what players they want to keep and what players they want to leave unprotected.

3.5 million for Gudbranson, by the way.
