See the Friedman tweet at the top of the page though...makes it seem like they're considering including NMCs, but seems like that could be a giant cluster.

my bad missed that ... yesterday there was talk they would be available

This expansion draft could help the Flames land a pretty good goalie (as in a team would likely be looking to make a trade rather than lose a goalie for nothing).

The debate on the cesspool yesterday was do the canucks protect the sedins

and the question was brought up .. will the league have a minimum $ cap value for claimed expansion players ... ie does Vegas HAVE TO claim to the cap floor :noidea:
Thing is, Sedins have value in a trade. At least to me, even if they were being acquired as a tandem. Throw them onto the Panthers with the Canucks keeping some salary and the Panthers are probably top 5 Cup contenders right now.

And I would hope the floor has to be reached. The league has spoken about wanting any expansion team to be competitive immediately. Bigger question: How many lottery ping-pong balls do they get?

See, MAF to the Flames I could see. And the Flames don't have any long-term bad deals for the Pens to take back.

That could make sense.

He had 4 straight sub .800 sv%'s in the postseason. That is absolutely awful and really incomparable with any of his contemporaries. He was better the past two playoffs but was he 3 more years at $5.75m better?

I'm sorry but I just don't see it without Pittsburgh taking back terrible contracts in return and in that case why not just rid yourself of him for free?

I'll just agree to disagree. I definitely get your point on contracts, especially with the big shift in protection of assets that's occurred, but I still think there are multiple teams that would take him. I don't think the return would be huge, but I also think his value is higher than what you're giving him.

well yah the floor will have to be reached for the first season ... but Im talking about in the expansion draft ... do they make them select salary equal to the floor or do they let them hit the floor with big name UFA's ? which can help them be competitive right away

That brings up another interesting point. Would the league try to institute some type of shenanigans rule (that's the technical term) to prevent a team from trading a guy to protect him (i.e., to a team that doesn't need their full complement of protects) and then get him right back after the draft?

I could see a loaded team like the Hawks trading a guy to a team like NYR who don't have a ton of young prospects in the system and are a little short on draft picks. Move a guy for a 3rd rounder (example only) then immediately trade him back after the expansion draft for a 2nd rounder.

tip of the day ... never overestimate the goalie trade market

the way i saw it coming down (if NMC players could be exposed) is the Sedins being exposed so the canucks could protect other players and the sedins would put it out there that they would retire if claimed

/bbb ... the sedins wont waive the nmc's ... theyre lifers ... Ill give you that their opinion on leaving might change in a year at the next deadline if the team is not progressing with the kids :noidea:

TBH, I think most teams will be fine with the number of players they can protect. I mean, check Washington for example: Holtby, Niskanen, Orlov, Carlson, OV, Backstrom, Oshie, Williams, Burakovsky, Kuzy. Maybe lose Alzner without wanting to but not the end of the world right?

I know, we've discussed the Sedins and I'm more of that opinion (that they may seek a change if the team's direction is long-term focused).

Just saying they have more trade value IMO than Fleury.

Keep in mind the position limits though too. That one goaltender limit could burn a few teams.

Guess if I'm protecting for the Leafs, it'd have to be Sparks, Rielly, Gardiner, Corrado, Kadri, Komarov, JVR, Bozak, Soshnikov and one of Holland/Hyman.

Yep, this won't be too hard on the Leafs lol

Goodbye Kapanen. And if I'm the 2nd expansion team I'll take Connor Brown too. Enjoy your final year with Bozak though
