That sounds like just another Saturday night.

lol - Pretty much, but due to the fact that Rogers has cut the allotted time for Coach's Corner, Grapes is tripping over his words in his attempt to cover everything.

Here we go, TSN says the same. So Kapanen and Brown would both need to be on the list (or be exposed) for a 2017 offseason expansion draft.

"The answer is that first- and second-year professional players - including those in the minors - will be exempt from the expansion draft. Players entering the third and final year of their entry-level contract would be eligible, though."

NHL presents potential expansion draft plans
I suppose the Leafs don't really need to protect any goalies.

It pains me to say these two words, together, in the same sentence.

Here goes...

GO BLACKHAWKS!!!!

Excuse me while I go throw up now...

If the Leafs play Nylander in his 10th games tomorrow, then he would need to be protected next summer as well.
I'd send his ass back to Ricoh in a heathbeat

I guess the other minor point would be that it would save a year on his ELC as well.

He will need to be protected anyway. It doesn't matter if he's in the AHL or the NHL.

Yeah, probably said that the night he was at the Joe a couple weeks ago. Trying to get on my good side so I didn't kill him with my shoe if I ran into him...

Yay Hossa, 1-0 Blackhawks. That doesn't hurt so much. Although he's now a Blackhawk, I still like Hossa. Have ever since he was a Sen.

it's not about that, it's about being on his 2nd or 3rd year of the pro contract.

Ah, based on how it's being reported you may be right now that I look at it, the example in the TSN article does clearly mention the ELC rather than simply referring to the 3rd pro year. I'm not sure if that's intentional or not.

on second look you may be right. (first theory proposed by petrillo, potentially corrected by LeBrun)
if it was a junior player and they burn a year (like Virtanen, McCann, etc) that's when you have to worry.
because Nylander came from Europe, so went to the A, that's a pro contract year anyway.

guess we'll get a ton of clarity before it comes up
my fear is that my GM is not clever enough to do any of the side-deals to protect our good assets.
