If Ottawa can use Phaneuf the way Babs did, he's still overpaid but it's not that bad a deal.

Wouldn't play him with Karlsson, though.

He's a decent player but it's the term that I don't like with Dion. five years??/Yikes!!

Definitely makes the team better in the here and now though. I think the plan is for Phaneuf to shore up the second pair with Ceci.

On the flip side I'm thrilled to never have to watch Cowen in a Sens jersey ever again. And Greening.. LOL. I'll miss Michalek; he was a good hardworking player but injuries have pretty much reduced him to bottom six roles. I'm not sure he has it anymore to rebuild his game for the umpteenth time. Never had any complaints about him though.

Wonder if Lou can flip any of the return this deadline - Cowen and Michalek both have a year remaining and Michalek is still recovering from a broken finger but I guess it's possible one of them are moved.

They usually say the team that acquires the best player wins the trade, so I declare the Leafs winners by acquiring that 2017 2nd round pick.

I guess the Leafs were upset about the Josh Donaldson signing and decided to make a splash.

Also, that certainly clears a lot of cap space for one Steven Stamkos.

The Leafs have a grand total of $37 mil committed next season. If Kadri and Rielly combine for, say, $10 mil, they still have a bajillion dollars to give Stamkos.

There's really no need to buy them out - even if Stamkos signs here, they a) have more than enough cap space to accommodate him, and b) have at least one more rough year ahead of them before they can realistically contend for the playoffs.
