It should be noted that while Phaneuf's deal is longer than all these guys' deals, his salary is declining. He makes $6M and $5.5 in his last two years. That's somewhat more palatable.

For cap purposes, isn't the annual hit always the same? :noidea:

Is the actual cash outlay (which you reference) a concern in OTT?

I want to see Dion Phaneuf become the Jerome Messam of the NHL, I think every Canadian team needs to sample a taste of Dion.

It is for our cheap owner. The Sens aren't close to the cap with or without Phaneuf.

So yeah, actual dollars are the big thing for Melnyk. :L

i guess the decreased cash owing to 210 is good considering the declining cdn dollar and Melnyks suspect finances (although the new group that wants to do the un-friendly takeover has big cake)

but yah ... 7 shmill aav until 2020-21 ... which is tough if the cap declines and they want to spend to the cap to be competitive :noidea:

They're lucky they've got Karlsson on that deal.

But now they're paying $14.25 mil/yr in cap space to Phaneuf and Bobby Ryan. Although Ryan is admittedly doing much better this season.

Anyone know if the Leafs would be on the hook for any cap re-capture penalties if Dion doesn't play out the full term?

Ryan has been awesome this year.

As bad as people say Phaneuf is, he is such a massive upgrade at the 2LD for Ottawa that this is win for the next 2 years. Will worry about the rest after that.

I would have loved it if they could have gotten a different top 4 LD but without his salary baggage No one will take all the Sens garbage like the Leafs just did. Can always buy out Phaneuf in a couple of years.

Doesn't the contract have to be signed after the player turns 35?

Anyway, fat chance Phaneuf retires before 35.
I thought cap recapture could come in on under 35 deals if they're front loaded? I don't remember all of it, but I remember that was one of the reasons the Sabres had to buy out Ehrhoff, even though he was playing pretty well.

And I wouldn't expect him to retire, but you just never know what could happen. He could get a better offer from the Department of Player Safetry for instance.

I'm a little sad that we're no longer going to see the following at the ACC:

They didn't trade April Reimer too, did they? THOSE SAVAGES

So, this gives me hope. If Phaneuf can be moved, then Jack Johnson can be moved. I would say "damn, I wish the Jackets could have moved JJ to Ottawa", but when I see the return... Nah. I'm good.

@Fan960Wills
#MapleLeafs Babcock told us none of the players acquired in today's trade with #Senators will be available for tonight's game vs. #Flames

So, it seems that there are more than a few around here that are now angry at the bald, Finnish fuckwit.

Seems they feel he "missed the boat" today.

The stupid, it burns.

Well, the Leafs have a fuck ton of cap space now. I'd gladly take on JJ's contract.

Just gotta throw in Columbus' first rounder too.

Wait?? Did you miss the get Phaneuf boat or the Greening and Cowen boat??

Because both of those boats have some leaks.

So if there's anything today proved it's that in-division trading is officially A-OK.

Wonder what Tampa's asking for Drouin these days...

For Komarov and your next 2 1sts? Done.

I think specifically the Dion one, but a pairing of Prout and Cowen would be astonishing.

I wonder if Tyutin and Dubinsky would be interested in going back to New York?
