I get why the league suspends guys, they have to protect themselves. But in the same vein, a player has to protect themselves. Just like in real world, you have to watch out for yourself instead of the company sometimes.

Are you suggesting players are protecting themselves and not attending the ASG because John Scott will be there?

:heh:

(and yes, that was facetious).

You're making it sound like they are choosing not to go to a ribbon cutting for a gas station opening.

They are choosing not to go to THE annual self promotion event that the NHL spends a shit load of money on. It's different.

In the real world, you don't go very far embarrassing or pissing off your bosses when they are trying to make everyone love them.
In the real world, the bosses are usually the ones who do the most to make the company function. That obviously isn't the case in the NHL.

Further, the ASG is most certainly not THE annual self promotion event for the NHL. The Stanley Cup Playoffs are way, way more of a self-promotion for the league than the ASG. Hell, every regular season game, dull as they may get over an 82 game schedule by 30 teams, are better self-promoting than a bunch of players barely trying to score against a goalie who is barely moving.

Finally, the NHL would be much better served if the players got a week off to rest and recouperate prior to the second half of the season. The on-ice product would benefit and in the long run the better the players are playing in real, competitive games the more likelihood your product gets more notice by the population at-large.

Didn't a few years ago the NHL say no to players going to see the fans and doing events but sitting out the all star game? If so screw the whole weekend then.

I thought a few years ago a slightly injured player offered to go to the All Star Game and do all of the events and fan interactions but not play in the game itself but the league said no.

Vincent Damphousse scored 4 goals in the all star game playing against the best players in the world. And he's not in the hall of fame. Just shows the event is meaningless.

So move it to the end of the season?

The promotion in the All Star Game host city is insane. The Cup final is promotion sure, but let's be honest non (or casual) hockey fans aren't really paying attention unless their city is involved.

The events surrounding the All Star game are focused on one thing: The love of the game. Whether teaching it or celebrating it. I've never been in a city that even sniffed the finals, so I don't know if it's like that or not. I do know that series against the Pens a few years ago was not promoted like the ASG game was here. Not even remotely close.

I don't remember that. Wouldn't surprise me. 95% of the people the ASG reaches are through the game on TV, so you can see the league saying "we want you in the game".

The league isn't necessarily really great at handling that kind of thing. *cough*John Scott*cough*

People use arguments like this when making Olympic bids that cost a tonne and leave next to nothing in terms of legacy to the city it was in.

There are other ways to promote hockey than pissing off players for a weekend when they can be focusing on what really matters.

I remember what a big deal the All-Star game being held in Columbus was in NYC last year. Times Square was filled with "Team Toews" jerseys, you could feel the excitement.

Oh wait a minute, I'm remembering incorrectly. No one outside of Columbus gave a shit. At least with the Stanley Cup Final there are at least two cities that give a shit (well, unless Arizona makes it I guess) and it lasts longer.

There's got to be a way they can lengthen player introductions. They go by so fast.

OK, they JUST said Garter had beat his old record previously but they didn't count it because he started a couple of feet back from the starting line.
Now everyone is fellating Larkin for 'shattering the record' and he had a running start from the blueline.

that's it cancel the allstar game, it's a sham.

Yeah Bettman until 2022. That will be his 30th year then so maybe he'll step down after that. He'll be 70 that year.
