When they're that close to the boards digging the puck out of their feet they already know that the boards are there. I don't see how this hurts but I'm far from convinced that it helps either. It's not like it's like the warning track in baseball, which not only looks different but also feels different.

Agreed . In baseball the "warning" is effective because of the change in color and texture. The fact that no one is beside or coming at you with iron elbow pads trying to compress your torso into the boards helps also.

Also I think it would only be fair that if a team clears to the puck into the moat and it is eaten by a piranha(s) that team will be assessed a 2 minute penalty AND will not be allowed to make any player substitutions.

LOL - this could be the golden ticket that "grows the game" ! Gary can put on a medieval Jesters outfit (bells on curled toes etc ) and dance around the top of the glass giggling and tossing pixie dust on the Players who fall in the boat.
