Maybe, but have you looked at the forwards available for rent? After Vermette, the next best available player might be Jagr, with Chris Stewart third. That is a terrible, awful, no-good selection to choose from. Maloney has no reason to be realistic right now because you never know who'll be stupid enough to bite (luckily for you, Murray isn't).

The bolded is what gets me.

If anyone is giving up that kind of package it should be for a signed player.

Using Ottawa as an example, would Lazar and a 1st be far from getting a player like Eberle, Hanzal or Skinner? I doubt it.

They might have add a piece but they get a player for more than 15 games.

I think that's tough to say in all cases. Sure it works against more teams than it works for, but there are plenty of instances of a rental helping a team win the Cup.

In those cases, the rental price is generally regarded as worth it no matter what it was. I'm pretty sure most of us on here (screw you Kings, Hawks, and Wings fans!) would happily give up a 1st and a good prospect for a rental if it brought a Cup in the current year.

If the Devils shop Jagr and get a 2nd rounder I'd be ecstatic.

Would you like a lightly used Craig Adams? Or perhaps a nice vintage Zach Sill? PLEASE GIVE JAGR TO THE PENS. *sobs like the ten year old that did when he was traded away*

A lot of the competitors are much tighter against the cap than in prior years though, so bringing in a rental is tougher. I think there will be relatively fewer buyers than in years past. There are definitely some teams like Nashville or Anaheim - and to a lesser extent Tampa - who look like they could be for real that have plenty of space though. The Isles have some space too but are already without a 1st or 2nd, so they don't have as many bargaining chips.

So the weak supply might be balanced out by weaker demand.

Then again, I'm always amazed how much some teams give up for rentals.

Please don't bring me back to 2013. *sigh*

That site is like going to one of those sites that posts pictures of dead people. If I type in Mike Milbury or Don Maloney, my heart might explode out of my chest and I'll end up on said site.

I have been looking at the Isles history and...

You should stay away.

I had forgotten Neil Smith was in charge of one draft for the Isles. He had the reigns ONE DAY and he pulled this masterpiece:
June 24, 2006
Boston Bruins acquire
2006 3rd round pick (#71-Brad Marchand)
New York Islander Acquire
2006 4th round pick (#98-James Delory)
2006 5th round pick (#126-Shane Sims)

And honestly, aS bad as Milbury was, I think Snow is giving him a run for his money.

The worst trade list is fun too. There's no explanation that I could find of what got them on the list other than perhaps the opinion of the person who operates the site. But there are some amazing ones on there.

Buffalo Sabres acquire
Dominik Hasek

Chicago Blackhawks acquire
Stephane Beauregard
1993 4th round pick (#90-Eric Daze)

Tom Kurvers is on there of course. Anyone who reads DGB is well acquainted with that one.

Up until this year, I'd agree with you, but picking up Boychuk and Leddy were some shrewd moves by Garth.

Crazy the Isles only ended up on the 'worst' list three times. Quite astonishing actually. That Guy Lafleur trade is crazy. Never knew that.

I'd throw Halak on that list too. Possibly even above Boychuk and Leddy just because of how cheap it was.

As I said though, it was just subjective. I'm sure we could find plenty more examples to put the Isles on the list

This is from the worst trades list
June 6, 1986

Boston Bruins acquire
Cam Neely
1987 1st round pick (#3-Glen Wesley)

Vancouver Canucks acquire
Barry Pederson

Ouch.

And this gem:
May 22, 1970
Montreal Canadiens acquire
cash
1971 1st round pick (#1-Guy Lafleur)
Francois Lacombe

California Golden Seals (Oakland) acquire
1970 1st round pick (#10-Chris Oddleifson)
Ernie Hicke

The follow-up to the above transaction is good stuff as well:

The Kings were in danger of "beating" the Seals out for last place, and if this happened Pollock would lose his first overall pick. Pollock traded the aging Ralph Backstrom to the Kings for two players. Backstrom's presence lifted the Kings out of last place, and the Seals finished at the bottom, granting the Habs the first pick. Pollock hesitated between Lafleur and Marcel Dionne, but chose Lafleur with the first draft choice.

Some of those would have looked far worse if they carried it all the way through too with acquired picks being further moved.

Also, how is the 1st that became Ray Bourque for Ron Grahame not on the list?
