Could an NHL player declare Monte Carlo as his residence and avoid significant taxes? I know a lot of professional tennis players go that route.
/Much easier for tennis players due to them having to travel to where the tournaments are being held.

For a player who was an American citizen it wouldn't make a difference anyway, since the US is one of very few countries that will take their pound of flesh even if you live and earn all of your income elsewhere and never once set foot in the country.
Back in the Moginly days, a few Canucks lived in Point Roberts (an American peninsula accessible only from Canada, about 30 minutes from Vancouver) and claimed American income for the % of games that were played in the US. Not sure if they can still do that.
