Oilers knock off Wild in shootout; Fedun suffers broken leg
Edmonton defenceman Taylor Fedun broke his right left after getting his skates tangled with a stick while racing Minnesota's Eric Nystrom for a loose puck in the second period. Fedun left the ice on a stretcher and was taken to a hospital and did not make the trip back to Edmonton with his teammates.
Nystrom was given a five-minute major penalty for boarding and a game misconduct.
Anaheim Ducks defenceman Kurtis Foster, who almost saw his career ended by a similar injury offered his thoughts on the play.
"To be honest, I was hoping and wishing I would never have to see anyone go through what I had to recover from," said Oilers Kurtis Foster. "I really hope this will lead to the changes of the icing rule that need to be made!
"Touch icing is a dangerous play that is not needed in our league and maybe this will open the eyes of the NHL and the NHLPA. A fractured femur for the second time is awful, but let's hope nothing worse happens to somebody someday!"
Foster has already reached out to Fedun via text and offered his support to the Oilers medical staff should they need it.
Edmonton was forced to play part of the second period and all of the third with only three defencemen. Ladislav Smid (right shoulder) and Taylor Chorney (right knee) also were injured during the game.
