There goes one of our best medal hopes in ski slopestyle. Still have three girls in the finals but I get the sense we will get shut out again

Apparently Kaya Turski separated her shoulder in her first run crash, popped it back in the socket and went again. Now that is a Canadian athlete

Anton Gafarov (Russia) moment in cross country was pretty touching. Had a crash on a downhill section and partly broke his ski. Laid down crying for a moment (knowing his Olympics were over) and then got up. Got back up and kept going even though he had no chance of advancing and his equipment was broken. Ski completely fell apart as he went down the last hill. Coach runs out and gives him a new ski. He skies it all the way home and claps to the crowd several times down the final stretch.

That reminds me of this story, eloco...

Bjornar Haakensmoen was presented with more than five tons of Canadian maple syrup in Oslo Wednesday for his act of sportsmanship at the Olympics in February.

The Norwegian cross-country coach received the gift as a token of appreciation for handing a spare ski pole to Sara Renner after the Canadian skier broke hers midway through the team sprint event.

Renner and Canadian teammate Beckie Scott went on to win a silver medal while the Norwegians placed fourth.

What speeds can these speed skaters hit? Even on TV they look like bats out of hell.

I think it was during the Nagano games they did a demonstration by having Sergei Fedorov (I think) take on one of the female (Canadian?) speed skaters in a single lap around the speed skating loop.

Fedorov was obviously no slouch in the speed category, but he got DESTROYED in this race.

CBC still claiming Alex Gough is "in position" for a medal, but in reality she has no chance. In luge that deficit is titanic

The claim is valid, but she needs help. One of the top 3 needs help from one of the top 3. If any of them mess up she slides in. Not unheard of.

By the way, Gough moved up to 4th place in the women's luge with one run remaining. Still hopeful for a medal.

Another speed skating medal for the Dutch

On that subject, whet the hell happened to our long track program? Used to have medal contenders in everything. That famed Olympic ice in Calgary must be losing its luster

Just in a bit of a down cycle, I reckon. The Dutch certainly have a long tradition of speed skating excellence though (and I think they're pissed for a disappointing showing (at least in their eyes) in Vancouver).

Also, as for the Olympic Oval in Calgary, it was starting to have some of the same problems as the NVMC on Long Island (leaky roof etc.).
