So, the Bears are currently heading into free agency at 27th in available cap room with just north of 10 million available. Clearly, Pace and company are unlikely to be making a big splash. However, there are holes to be patched up, Parkey replacements we could bring in at a decent price, depth pieces to be had... and these could all wind up becoming suddenly key in a race for the divisional title again in 2019.

I think before we get to talk about potential outside targets, we need to figure out the Amos/Callahan situation. So, here's a thread to consolidate the talk/news about that and any other free agent targets/rumors/signings... etc...

And I'm sure even if Callahan signs elsewhere, Amos will still test the market - can't blame him for that. I think the majority of opinions out there have the Bears signing one or the other, but not both. I'm starting to believe it's more likely that both will walk.

As for the draft, it's tough enough predicting a 1st rounder, let alone trying to figure who we'd take late in the 3rd round. Throw in the obvious that Pace is a BPA kinda guy and it really makes for a wild card guess. Which is why simply for the sake of discussion as the draft draws near, I'm probably going to run with which position will be that initial pick.

Any chance we cut Daniel? That’d clear up a bit of cap room. We need to keep money in the bank for Jackson and Smith. If we cut Daniel, we might bring back one of the two. If not, I bet they are both gone and we try to fill the holes left behind with cheaper FAs.

Any chance we cut Daniel? That’d clear up a bit of cap room. We need to keep money in the bank for Jackson and Smith. If we cut Daniel, we might bring back one of the two. If not, I bet they are both gone and we try to fill the holes left behind with cheaper FAs.

My guess, it will only be one of the two the Bears will resign. Which one? Dunno. Bush seems to be an ok back up to Amos, and frankly, the kid that spelled Callahan at the end of the season did ok as well, so who knows.

McMannis is 31, certainly no spring chicken. He did do a respectable job, though. Even if his one bad moment was getting beat by Golden Tate on 4th and goal to lose our playoff game.

I think we bring back one of the two. I would probably prefer Amos. I think the nickel back position is in a great position to succeed with the talent surrounding it. McMannis is a career special teamer and like we both say... he did a solid job.

Yeah, hope no one in here thinks McMannis is young. I think a lot of us were pleasantly surprised at his performance on the field. In years past, McMannis was pretty much a STs ace and that's about it. He never played a lot of snaps from scrimmage until this past season. Maybe he's turned the corner, but I'm not wild about the idea of him taking over full time if/when Callahan walks.

With only 10 mil in cap space. It's hard for me to envision being able to keep both while still filling out the rest of the roster. Sucks...

I think I've made it clear that I would easily choose Amos, but he will be the most expensive. The bright side? There is an unusual amount of good safeties due to enter UFA. This could water down all of their price points. As opposed to most years, where Amos would likely be the top dog and have teams scrapping/clawing to land him.

I think both are walking. I’d love to keep both, but we have Trubiskys contract to think about. We have Jackson’s contract to think about.

I’m not too worried about it though. I think Pace knows exactly what he’s doing. I think the man knows how to find talent. Our secondary and Dline is ridiculous because of it. McManus will be good as a stop gap at the slot. I think he gives Pace a fail safe to draft someone at that position and develop. Hell, Joseph or Tolliver might even be able to step in. I don’t think losing Amos will be too big of a deal either. I like our depth there as well.

The essential players we need on this defense are Mack, Hicks, Goldman, Jackson, Smith, and Fuller. Other than those 6 players, we can find stop gaps and young players to fill in and remain elite. Hopefully we can add more players to that group as those players age, but Smith and Jackson NEED to be planned to keep in the equation. There’s really no players we NEED on offense. Hopefully Trubisky becomes one, but he isn’t there yet. Maybe Robinson, Burton, or Miller becomes some players we need to keep around, but they aren’t there yet.

I guess I just don't get lateral moves in football. You're not paying shit for Howard, so why create a roster hole, when you don't need to...especially just to bring in a poor man's version of Howard??

I think this is Nagy and Pace's worst decision yet.

Is Davis the same style of player as Howard?

Stat-wise Davis had slightly better number averages with half the carries. If he's a more fluid back like a Kareem Hunt/Leonard Fornette as opposed to Howards Smash-mouth run style, that would be a slight upgrade.

If we can flip Howard for a 5th or better, this becomes a slightly better addition as opposed to a lateral move.

Stat-wise Davis had slightly better number averages with half the carries. If he's a more fluid back like a Kareem Hunt/Leonard Fornette as opposed to Howards Smash-mouth run style, that would be a slight upgrade.
