It's a big blow for the defending AL West champions, and though the team has more pitching depth than most clubs, they also shut right-hander A.J. Griffin down for three weeks over the weekend and will likely be without him for at least the first month of the season, per the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser ([ame="[MEDIA=twitter]444868209401819136[/MEDIA]"]on Twitter[/ame]). Beyond that, offseason signee Scott Kazmir was scratched from today's Spring Training start due to triceps stiffness.
With Parker and Griffin on the shelf, the A's would figure to open the season with Kazmir (if his triceps injury is minor), Sonny Gray, Dan Straily, Tommy Milone and one of Drew Pomeranz, Jesse Chavez or Josh Lindblom in the rotation (Slusser earlier [ame="[MEDIA=twitter]445602908789170176[/MEDIA]"]tweeted[/ame] that it would likely be Chavez). Obviously, that's a considerably weaker group than it would be with a healthy Parker and Griffin in the mix, and it's fair to wonder if the A's will pursue a trade to add further depth -- perhaps an out-of-options starter from another club.

We have trouble hitting LH finesse pitchers, and Kazmir is one of them. Our struggles against him might have had something to do with the signing.

I've always thought one of the true beauties of baseball was the longevity of the season. It is the very definition of a game which is a marathon and not a sprint.

At the end of the season, those 162 games, the cold/hot weather, injuries, etc all comes out in the wash, and the best team wins the WS.

Do you think any skill at all goes into the fact they keep winning? Or is all about nothing but "good fortune?"

Veteran pitcher Jose Contreras was offered re-assignment to minor league camp, part of a flurry of roster moves the team made on Monday.

Contreras, 42, is weighing his options, which could include retiring.

Pitchers Nick Tepesch, Cory Burns and Miles Mikolas along with infielder Andy Parrino were optioned to Triple-A. Pitcher Daniel Bard, recovering from thoracic outlet syndrome surgery in January, was re-assigned to minor league camp along with outfielders Brad Snyder and Bryan Peterson, catchers Patrick Cantwell and Brett Nicholas and infielder Kensuke Tanaka.

The Rangers now have 30 players remaining in big-league camp.
