What are the options to improve the line immediately through free agency? regardless of whom the quarterback may be, the offensive line needs to be addressed before the regular season. Tom Brady or Peyton Manning could be our qb and we would potentially be the worst team in the league still. Is there an immediate fix, or is going to be pieced together till next year's draft/free agency?

I wouldn't panic yet. They are a week in in practices and had to face a blitz happy defense that was sending 7 guys on almost every play. The defenses are always ahead of the offenses at this time of camp. I also think that they lost confidence in that game as it wore along and they were having trouble in the blitz pickup. Hopefully now they go back into the film room and get their blitz pickups down pat. If come week 3 of preseason and they're making the same mistakes then I would start to worry about who to bring in.

Also, I think getting a real center in their like Goodwin will make a difference. Not only do they snap the ball, but they make the calls for the OL before the snap. Maybe he can get them more organized for blitz pickup.

Hopefully Goodwin is good. For all we know he turned to complete crap and rode the backs of his pro bowl gaurds. Gotta wonder why the Saints didn't bother bringing him back and instead are using a washed up Kreutz.

I hope the Raiders bring just as much heat as the Saints did. I also hope Harbaugh & Staff are prepared to insert new faces into the mix on 1st team (Boone, Goodwin). I agree, panicking is not the answer, but doing nothing is not the answer either. IMO, we have issues that go beyond the cause of surprise.

Agreed- they need to be able to react to that heat and make the defense pay by getting the ball out quickly and to the right place. Just having Goodwin making the blocking calls over Snyder will be an improvement in itself. I'd like to see Boone on the left side and Staley on the right in a preseason game or 2.

Exactly!

One of the most frustrating things for me to watch year-in-and-year-out is coaches starting contracts over talent. I get the whole business end of the reason, but there are many great players who go undiscovered because they are buried on the depth chart behind some over-priced piece of mediocrity.

List of free agent OL

Max starks-has been injured the 2 seasons with back and neck injury's

Langston Walker-tends to struggle in pass protection, but he's a very forceful run-blocker on the right side.

Bryant McKinnie-has immense talent, but he's also a fat, lazy slob. The Vikings cut the soon-to-be 32-year-old McKinnie because he weighed in close to 400 pounds at training camp. He'd be a good addition to a team if he somehow gets his act together, but that's probably not going to happen.

Ryan O'Callaghan-injured most of last season he might be good as a back up

Mark Tauscher,-at age 34 does he have what it takes to be a starter?

Flozell Adams-at age 36 he did a ok job last season with the steelers but at the end of his career

Shawn Andrews-is a headcase but when he got his act together he can be a decent football player

There are other guys out there but not worth talking about lol

if we are to discount the past few seasons, i would like to see boone and a davis at the two T spots. it seems to me that iupati and staley are an awful combo for protection. in fact, i thought in the saints game, a. davis did far better than staley or iupati.

they're doing the right thing now - working on it - both blitz pick-ups and hot reads. as Staley says, they ALL have to improve their communication first. once the communication improves, then they can fine tune the execution part.

agree we don't need to rush out and sign another starting offensive linemen.

if Boone or other player is deserving, i have no doubt this new Staff isn't going by larger contract or higher draft spot. it might not happen immediately, but they're going to make the necessary changes.

You'd like to bench Staley and leave A. Davis in? Wow.

if they had more of an off-season, wanted them to switch sides with Davis and Staley? try this out in the off-season first? but alas, its kinda tough to do it now.

I can understand switching Davis to blind side once he improves a bit, but Boone over Staley? Yikes.

yeah, Davis played left side all thru college, so he MIGHT be more comfortable that side? we already know Staley can play well on the right side.

if Boone or other player is deserving, not worried he won't get a chance. a new coaching Staff isn't as biased.

Contract size absolutely influences who starts, but I hope you are correct when you say the staff will make the necessary changes.

I believe the issues will work themselves out before the season starts so no need to panic.

That's not to imply everything will be perfect week 1 but most of what happened this past Friday seemed more mental than anything and that will iron itself out as everyone gets more comfortable in the offense and with more reps.

If the offensive line is still getting blown up week 3 of the preseason than I think their will be a need to shuffle things around and make changes.

Also I think it'll help once Goodwin is starting. It's not a knock on Snyder but Goodwin does bring experience to the position and will better able to do presnap reads and be the leader on the line once he gets the offense down.

As much as I hated taking Davis at 11 let's not jump the gun after a preseason game. Let's see what he can do when the regular season gets started. I have a LOT More patience for him than Joe Staley because he's still a baby. It's time for Staley, on the other hand, to play like he did for half a season a couple of years ago or move to a different position (or team). Maybe center.

I agree with this, and for as frustrating as it is to watch Davis give DE's directions to the QB, I do agree we still need to be patient. That said, however, I do want to see progress...

Davis was the 2nd youngest player in the NFL last year. His first year is a gimme. I'm giving him a pass until the latter half of this year. If we haven't at least seen improvement from his horrible play so far by that time then start your booing.
