Sabean was talking about Tier 2 FA's and not to expect any big names (which I'm actually happy with). I wonder if the Giants FO considers Michael Cuddyer and Josh Willingham in that 2nd tier billing? Where does Carlos Beltran fall?

CarBel falls in the "deke the entire world into thinking I'm not in pursuit of him" file.

After the ridiculous middle infielder contracts that have been signed the last few weeks, this one seems pretty sane. The Cubs are paying him to be a 1.5 WAR guy and he'll likely end up 2.0 WAR plus. Could be a very good move for them, depending.

Part of me would've liked to see him in SF...but that would preclude getting CarBel.

Yeah. I thought the money and the years were reasonable, but I didn't do your WAR math. I'm glad it jives with my initial reaction. Theo really knows what he is doing. Go figure. :noidea:

Read that also. I hope he was essentially saying no Pujols/Prince/Reyes.

I wonder how challenging it would be to be overly optimistic about the 2012 Giants...if Melky is the only addition to a woeful offense?

Ok, let me be pollyanna/Giants apologist/kool aide drinker here.

Here are legitimate upgrades we can reasonably anticipate for 2012:

1. 125+ games of Buster
2. Even year Huff
3. 120 games from Franchez
4. Stamos hitting .250
5. 150+ games from Panda
6. Belt 270/350/475 in 500+ ABs
7. Melky 280/330/415 in 500+ ABs
8. Nate 280/330/440 in 350+ ABs

And now putting on my shatpants, things that could blow up:
1. Buster doesn't come back/ needs to be moved to 1b
2. Huff goes RoRo
3. Franchez trips on his son's Razor and shatters his entire torso
4. Stamos never figures it out, moves to Hollywood and takes casting calls
5. Panda eats his way out of the league
6. Belt becomes paralyzed with his failures at the plate and takes up volleyball
7. We get 2010 NL Melky
8. Nate never puts it together and becomes a member of Hair Club for Men.
9. Timmy and Matt become so frustrated with the Giants offense that they sue for non-support and go on strike while the case pends.
10. Bum and Song completely regress.
11. We trot out seven different #5 starters who all go Zito
12. Weez is never healthy again
13. Lopez and Affeldt become complacent and suck
14. Casilla/RamRam/Romo/Runzler are erratic

None of the first list are unreasonable. Not all of them will occur, but many likely will.

Almost none of the second list are likely to occur, but a few might. All of which ignores the mortal lock of CarBel signing a two year plus club option for 2014 contract for $35MM (15, 15, and 15/5).

93 wins; NLW Champs and two seed in the playoffs.

You read it here first.

Giants are dangling Ramirez and Affeldt. Teams that could use bullpen help are teh Red Sox, Yankees, Reds and Angles.

Think that maybe the Giants could swing a deal for a young SS, maybe Eduardo Nunez for NYY or Jed Lowrie of BOS?

Also, this just crossed my mind. The Marlins are seriously looking into Jose Reyes, but they already have Hanley. Ramirez has stated already that he is unwilling to change positions and is starting to ware out his welcome in Miami. Discounting last year, he is a top payer in the league at a demanding position and is still just entering him prime.

IF Miami signs Reyes, I'd be willing to offer Belt, Brown, Surkamp and Hector Sanchez for Hanley Ramirez.

Ramirez-SS
Sanchez-2B
Beltran-LF
Posey-C
Sandoval-3B
Cabrera-CF
Huff-1B
Schierholtz-RF

And if you really want to get going, add in Morrison and we trade Wilson

Ramirez-SS
Sanchez-2B
Beltran-RF
Posey-C
Sandoval-3B
Morrison-LF
Huff-1B
Cabrera-CF

All the hypothetical trades and Wilson banter just got me thinking...

Of course, I like the looks of that, but I think the payroll would be closer to the $150 mil range than the $130 mil range, given that scenario. Find a way to unload Zito and we might be in business, but as it stands right now, either make that trade and forget about Beltran or stick with your Affeldt or RamRam for SS help idea.

My B, thought Ramirez earned about $11 mil through his contract but starting next year he earns $15, $15.5 and $16.

So yes, we'd have to forget about Beltran.

Why does he always clear waivers? Obviously, he isn't good enough to work his way into the current Giants bullpen (barring injuries), but he has loads of potential, and there are some really bad bullies out there.

Great question. Maybe he's just not very good.

Total Jew bromance...
