ASHBURN, Va. -- The day wasn’t perfect, not that anyone expects it to be. ForWashington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, the day represented progress and that’s what the Redskins want to see. They will acknowledge, and will say privately, that they won’t be able to fully gauge his game until he’s under intense pressure during a game.

That’s when they want to see his pocket presence, his anticipation on throws. For now, it’s about little steps and some of those were evident in Tuesday’s minicamp. Coach Jay Gruden praised Griffin for standing tall during a pass from his own goal line, a third-and-10 completion to Pierre Garcon. Gruden praised him for another throw that was dropped.

Andre Roberts (corner Bashaud Breeland fell). Safety Dashon Goldson asked aloud, “How many seconds was that?” Would Griffin have been sacked? Or was it a great play?

Another time he rolled to his left on a bootleg, got his hips around and threw a perfect pass to tight end Niles Paul. On the next play Griffin tossed a back-shoulder throw to DeSean Jackson. One of those questionable calls arose later when he escaped the pocket -- it looked like a would-be sack, but you can credit quick pressure from Trent Murphy rather than just blaming Griffin for holding the ball too long. But on the play, Griffin ran left and lofted a pass to Ryan Grant, who made an over-the-shoulder catch in the end zone.

That’s the tough part to know: When is Griffin holding the ball too long vs. when is it a good play? The object in these workouts is to get the ball out on time and in rhythm. It’s a question the coaches consider as well. Teammates say they see a more confident Griffin, but even they temper it by pointing to the need to see it in games.

“Every situation is different for the quarterback,” Gruden said. “There are some plays when they scramble out of the pocket and you say he should have stayed. But for the most part it’s playing the position and doing what he feels is natural. A lot of those things you can’t coach. He’s a very gifted quarterback. I’m not going to criticize him for ever aborting a play and getting out of the pocket and trying to make a big play. We’re just trying to work on, here’s the fundamentals, here are the fundamental plays that match this concept. Let’s learn from there. But once the pocket breaks down, Robert’s going to be Robert and do the best he can to make the play work.”

Gruden said the coaches pay close attention to Griffin’s footwork in the pocket, an area that needed a lot of work. They want to see a consistent base. They want to see him getting his feet around when he throws the ball, and they want to see him throw with anticipation.

Griffin was not perfect, missing high to an open Jamison Crowder on a deep cross and once throwing a pass under duress that was contested. But another time he avoided danger when Murphy was in his face on a bootleg by throwing the ball away. One thing Griffin did not do Tuesday: Take off and run.

“The pocket presence, when they’re live in the preseason, will tell all,” Gruden said. “But I feel good. The big thing is we’re trying to get the ball out of his hands, let him get the ball to our playmakers. We have playmakers on offense. If he can anticipate on some throws and get the ball out of his hands and his footwork is sound, then everything will be fine with him.”

pleased to see RG3 doing well . i will certainly take the "baby steps "

the other thing is murphy is getting consistent pressure what a good thing that is

Redskins minicamp: Observations from Tuesdays practice - The Washington Post

sty and joy-19 , the above observations address a couple of concerns . 1st it looks like gruden is going to be fair with Rg3 and he openly encouraged him

2nd it looks like Rg3 is getting the hang of progressions

what do you guys think ?
I think it's a positive sign on both fronts. But it's also day 1 of mini camp. Everyone and everything looks great on day 1. Hell, even ribeye was praised by his coach. But I do discern a different approach by Robert this year. Maybe he is going to work himself out of this hole he has dug. I sure hope so.

I know that there are many who have put the onus on Griffin, but what I believe to be the difference maker is the addition of Matt Cavanaugh. Sure Griffin has to put in the work, but now he has purpose and direction. He never got that under Lafleur because the offense was designed to take advantage of what he bought to the table from school. Never got that last year, because the team had no QB coach. This in essence is his first season under the tutelage of a coach who's sole responsibility is to teach him to function as a professional QB. That includes, proper hand and footwork, reading defenses, and going through progressions. It's still early, but how else do you explain the difference between Griffin in prior years and what he's displayed so far at this very early stage?

I agree that there is a difference in Griffin's approach, but unlike most, I am convinced that he didn't dig that hole that many believe him to be in by himself. Conversly, I also don't believe that these early, but encouraging signs are all the result of his doing, singularly. Whether, others agree or not, what we are witnessing is a team transition from one that had no clue to one being professionally constructed and run. That began with the hiring of SM, and the changes at QB the result of the hiring of Matt Cavanaugh.
