Drive: 4/5 stars. Hell of a fucking cast. Gosling was great, as was Mulligan, Cranston, and Brooks. Pearlmann even surprised me with a great performance.

Agreed. I just viewed it. Goslin was excellent playing the shy, low-key homicidal maniac, part time auto mechanic/heist getaway driver. Reminded me a little of Ryan O'neal in The Driver, 1978. Some decent chase scenes and good violence in the right places like Goslin's head bashing and Brooks' nice full razor slice on Cranston's arm "It won't hurt", lol.

Is it really that good? It would never even occur to me to watch that but maybe I'll give it a shot

The Nice Guys: 2/5 stars. I'm not doubting Gosling's acting abilities, but I am doubting his comedic abilities. His timing was just awful. To be fair, the script didn't give him a lot to work with, IMO. Fat Russell Crowe was pretty entertaining though. The little daughter was a superfluous character, they really should have cut her. The plot was also extremely disjointed.

Batman Begins for the hundredth time, still a perfect 5/5. Enough cannot be said about the influence this movie had on superhero movies and/or reboots. Reimagining Gotham as a true ghetto in need of saving was just awesome. One of the greatest movies of all time in my books.

Joe. 5/5. A great old movie from 1970 that looks at the clash between normal working folks and the 60s drug-crazed counter culture. Excellent performance by Peter Boyle who plays a factory worker and outspoken bigot who commiserates with an executive, Dennis Patrick, who's just murdered a drug dealer for screwing up his daughter's life. When the daughter, Susan Sarandon, runs away, the two join in a search of the hippie environs and even participate in an orgy. Later, tragedy ensues when the two track down the low lifes who robbed them. Great look at the naked, petite figure of the young Sarandon in her debut role. Worth the price of admission. Worthwhile for sure.

Anthropoid. 3/5. Concerns the plot to assassinate Nazie SS Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrichin, one of the main architects of the Holocaust, in Prague. (Not to be confused with Oberholtzer.) The murder succeeds but the conspiritors are tracked down and cornered in a church where they fight it out to the last bullet or suicide. Very good acting but just an average flick. You get to see a brief SS torture session ("so you play the violin?") and German soldiers getting happily mowed down by the resistance. $12.50 was too much for this.

The Night Of (Mini-series): 3.5/5 stars. Great acting from Ahmed and MKW, but the standout performances were Bill Camp and especially John Turturro. His character is in my top 20 TV character list now.

5/5. Very good 25-year old dark comedy set in the forties about the disillusionment that is Tinseltown. I can't imagine a better cast of characters for this Coen Bros. flick. Turturro is a quiet, unassuming writer reluctantly giving LA a shot who is put up in a sleazy hotel where he attempts to write a wrestling-themed screen play, while reporting to driven Hollywood studio head Michael Lerner in an over the top performance. Along the way Turturro befriends strange hotel neighbor and "insurance salesman" John Goodman, becomes involved in a murder investigation, and seeks advice from phony screenplay writer John Mahoney and his "assistant", Judy Dench. You can't also forget weird hotel clerk and underrated actor Steve Buscemi. This movie has a non-traditional but appropriate ending, nailed down by the Rita Hayworth-like beach beauty, hot model Isabell Townsend (wow!). Recommended if you want see something a little off the wall and humorous. Plus there are numerous subtle funny things going on; I had to give it a 5/5.

Vendetta. 4/5 stars. There are several movies with this title. I saw the one from 1999 about the Italian immigrants in New Orleans.

Daughter Rite (1980): 0/5 stars. I decided to take Intro to Film as my elective this year, and I am starting to realize that that was a terrible idea. This "movie" was bad on so many levels, I can't even begin to explain, so I won't, I'll just give you a quick summary:

A daughter is hated by her mom. Her mom is put in the hospital. The daughter confides in her sister, who she realizes she also hates when she refuses to put whipped cream in their fruit salad (I kid you not). The daughters make up, but then hate each other again when it is revealed that the mother asked the daughter she likes for money, and not the other daughter. They then walk upstairs and go through her dresser, where they find books and prescription pills for depression. They never realized their mother was depressed (even though I think they said that that was why she was in the hospital). The End.
