13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi: 2/5 stars. Maybe it would have been better if Michael Bay wasn't so infatuated with mindless shooting scenes. I'm all for bad ass action scenes, but there has to be some genuine character motivation for it to work. And nice subtlety, Bay. At one point there was a scene trying to show how frightened a soldier was, and he was reading from his diary: "Frightened; war; guns; no escape; trapped; death. :L

Janis: Little Girl Blue. 4/5. Good two-hour bio of Janis Jolpin, the frequently drug-crazed, problematic lead singer of the sixties psychedelic rock blues band, Big Brother and the Holding Company. I always like rock bios because they revisit the creation of some of the group's hits and provide interesting background info by those close to the singer, family, classmates, etc. One interesting thing they mentioned was that Janis was said to have got in a long line of girls waiting to do Jimi Hendricks. They never revealed if she reached the front of the line. lol. After mostly kicking her serious years old drug habit and switching to Johnny Walker, she died of an accidental heroin overdose in a motel at the age of 27.

Galaxy Quest: 3.5/5 stars. Alan Rickman and Sam Rockwell were great, but the standout performance was Enrico Colantoni's portrayal of Mathesar, the leader of an alien race. He was fucking hilarious, and perfect for the role. I'd recommend if you like Tim Allen, or Star Trek, or just want something innocent and funny to watch.

Also, Gyllenhall will forever be a bad ass for taking on the Mexican Cartel while packing a lip in his cruiser.

Wolf of Wall Street 4.5/5

A great movie, Money, Sex and Drugs... always makes a great combo for a story. Margo Robbie... just stunning. The sad part is that I DVRed the movie (was on FX) so all of the T and A was black boxed out.

The scene where the drugs finally took effect in the hotel and then getting into the lambo were tops.

I gave that movie 3/5 stars and DiCaprio is my favorite actor. I felt it was overlong and a tad misogynistic. But Margot Robbie:thumb:

Nah, 5/5. But people see it differently. Reasonably true to the real story of Balfort with some of the usual added hollywood excesses. It moved along at a good pace, and that's how some of the women were actually treated, strippers and employees. I'll watch it every year.

Agreed. Bad for the glass. lol. You might like 1981's "The Postman Always Rings Twice" where Nicholson and hot Jessica Lange have a steamy relationship. Of coarse, her old fart of a husband just had to go. Jack really gets down in this one.

Take Shelter: 4/5 stars. Hell of a performance from Shannon, and probably the greatest portrait of someone with a mental illness (either him or DiCaprio in The Aviator). Would have been a higher rating if the ending wasn't so frustrating and such a let-down.

Some actors really look the part. Michael Shannon just has that look of a really disturbed guy. I don't recall him in Vanilla Sky, but he was off the chart in Revolutionary Road with DiCaprio and Winslet, where he played the part as the outspoken, mentally ill, outpatient son of neighbors invited for dinner who proceeds to insult the hosts. Great work.

It seems there are two ways to interpret the Take Shelter sudden ending. The vacation at the beach was one of his recurring dreams and he is vindicated with the approaching apocalypse, or he wasn't sick at all, just distracted and clairvoyant. I don't care for flicks that force you to end the movie yourself. I rate it a 3 1/2.

I saw three endings:

1. It was a dream Shannon had, and Chastain acknowledged he was dreaming and had schizophrenia and was going to stand with him because she loved him.

2. It was Chastain's dream- she imagined the horrible things her husband experiences, and decided she will stand by him.

3. It was a real storm, and Shannon wasn't crazy.

I go with ending one, but the movie would have been much better if the ending was definitive.

I'm going to add a comedy series into the mix. The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret. 4/5 Stars. On Netflix right now. I guess it is considered a British comedy but I think most of the actors are American. The main character is a George Costanza-like guy who lucks into a promotion to head a new Energy Drink division of his company in the UK. Funny stuff.
