Team will still be losing money regardless of what the name/sponsor of the arena is

Larry Brooks says the Coyotes may be getting a new owner...

The NHL’s problem child franchise in Phoenix is about to change hands again, The Post has learned.

Andrew Barroway, who attempted to buy the Devils two years ago and believed he had an agreement to buy the Islanders earlier this year before Charles Wang switched course and instead reached a deal with Jonathan Ledecky, is in advanced negotiations to purchase 51 percent of the rebranded Arizona Coyotes, according to informed sources.

The sale of the troubled franchise, which has been in financial distress even prior to moving from downtown Phoenix to Glendale in 2003-04 after previously relocating from Winnipeg for the 1996-97 season, is expected to be completed within the month.

As part of the deal, Barroway would agree to drop his $10 million lawsuit against Wang in which he alleges that the Islanders’ owner reneged on an agreement to sell him the Brooklyn-bound franchise.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly declined comment when contacted by The Post. Barroway did not respond to email requests, and a Barroway associate also declined comment when reached by phone.

I'm gonna go ahead and nickname Mr. Barroway - Boots - it has a nice ring to it.

Boots Barroway, I like it. There have been some great names throughout this saga including Judge Redfield T. Baum and who can forget Glendale city manager Horatio 'Skeeter' Skeete.

/Okay, I threw the Skeeter in there.

According to Brooks RSE is claiming $24 million in loses last season and by the terms of the new lease agreement the franchise can leave if total losses exceed $50 million over a 5 year period (starting last year)

Does it get fast-tracked if losses hit the threshold in two years?

I don't believe so, I think the five year committment was pretty much set in stone. Of course, if Boots Barroway comes in and buys 51% of the team, would that have any impact on the previous deal? I have no clue.

Actually, esls was right on the mark with the 'Boots' moniker:

In 2006, Barroway had a deal to buy the Philadelphia 76ers, but that fell apart because he couldn't get the money together. Last summer, he was looking at buying the Devils, but eventually pulled out of the deal. Then, earlier this year, he was in talks to buy the Islanders until Wang pulled out.

So my prediction for expansion is for the 2017 season to celebrate the hundredth anniversay of the NHL the owners will divide about 1.25 to 1.5 Billion between them
