13 pitchers is a very Giants thing to do considering they play 22 games within the first 23 days of the season, with some uncertainty with Cain coming back from injury and Peavy being old....First bat up would be probably Parker or Williamson. Arroyo is still a year away. Having Heston as our long reliever in the event that Cain or Peavy struggles is a coup considering how well he did last season.
The Giants have serious depth at the back end of the rotation. Peavy and Cain are clearly at the top, but if they falter, they have Heston, who showed dominance in the first half of the season in '15, Blackburn who was the best SP in the PCL last year, and Stratton who was a first rounder who has moved slow, but has moved steady.

Worse-case-scenario (Cain and Peavy both crash and burn), I still feel OK with the Giants rotation.

Completely agree. I'm in a Zen place with the roster at the moment in a way I eerily have never felt before. *knocks on wood*

No surprise there. He was a solid contributor for the Giants but his time has passed. He just doesn't hit enough anymore to be a solid UTIL in The Show.
His D was good, but not THAT good. His real value was his versatility.

True, but as the Giants found out last season, his versatility is only valuable if he hits above the Mendoza line. The silver lining in Arias for the Giants last year was that without him struggling, the Giants probably wouldn't have called up and played Tomlinson as much or consistently as they had.

I wish Arias well though. He was a good Giant.

:10:

The Giants have been scary fortunate the last few years with that kind of outcome.

Scutaro goes down. Panik and Duffy get called up and play very well at 2B, with Panik taking the reigns due to an injury to Duffy.

Cain is hurt and cannot begin the season in the rotation. Heston is called up and pitches like an Ace for the first half of the season.

Sandoval leaves via Free Agency. Giants trade for McGahee. McGahee sucks more than Jenna Jamison so Duffy is given a shot at 3B while McGahee is sent to Sacto to "find his swing". Duffy plays out of his mind. McGahee is DFA'd shortly after and Duffy finishes runner-up to Bryant in the ROY race.

Arias hits the career wall and Panik breaks his back (literally. He BROKE his back!!). Tomlinson gets called up to fill in and plays like gangbusters, wresting the job away from Adrianza.

And this is not even mentioning 2010, where EVERY move the FO made worked perfectly.

True to all of it. However, at what point is fortunate just flat out knowing what they are doing? If Tomlinson was a fluke situation, that would be one thing. However, when it seems like the kids produce as soon as they are given semi-regular work in the bigs, it leads me to believe that the FO seems to be able to gauge their own prospects well. There is a reason why Duffy never played AAA. There is a reason why Tomlinson was given opportunities that otherwise would have gone to either Arias or Adrianza. There is a reason why Panik was given the opportunity when he did....as he was tearing up the minors at a time where Hicks was no longer cutting the mustard.

I enjoy our FO actually utilizing the farm in a way that hadn't happened with any sort of regularity since before Bonds.

I was very careful with my use of the word "fortunate". Someone who doesn't follow the team, or more specifically, the PsTB, would have used the word "lucky".

Looks like they're all wrong, none of them picked the Padres to win the division.

And they call themselves experts!!!

AJ Pollock shattered his elbow in tonight's game vs KC. He requires surgery. No word yet how long he is expected to be out, but I can't believe a shattered elbow would be a short recovery.

Big news, DBacks gonna lose a lot on offense and defense. Trading away Inciarte looks worse now even if he did help bring back a good SP.

Fuck my fucking life.

Hoping AJ can return by June, July at the latest. Huge loss. In Socrates Brito we trust.

I think Sacrates Brito brings much of the same skill set that Inciarte brought. Speedy outfielder with good defense and from what I've seen last season and in spring training he is a capable offensive player.

Could be done for the year. Any return would be pretty late in the season.
