First the Giants overpaid for Samardzija, now they overpaid for Cueto. $220 million for two pitchers and the Giants are no better than they were when the season ended. $220 million for two pitchers who will not even be the team's ace. $220 million for two pitchers and the San Francisco Giants are still not as good as the Los Angeles Dodgers; even without Zack Greinke. The Giants' streak of alternating between not making the playoffs and winning the World Series will end in 2016.

Someone is sad about David Price. Also doesn't understand baseball. No better than they were...LOL

It's time for you to put your helmet back on and for Pete's sake, stop licking the windows!

I get it, you don't follow the Giants so how could you be expected to make halfway decent assertions regarding the status of the current Giants team vs the roster when the season ended. But let me throw this little nugget your way and see if it sticks in that melon of yours. At the end of the season, the Giants were playing Trevor Brown at C, a guy that was a BACKUP in AA. They had 4 catchers out with injury and were playing Posey at 1B for the injured Belt. So PLEASE don't tell me that the current HEALTHY Giants roster is no better then the battered roster that limped to the finish line by season's end.

Sounds like the Dodgers "big" signing so far this offseason might not work out, with Iwakuma failing his physical.

Just heard this.

I think this is ultimately good for the dogs. They will now focus on Leake and Kazmir, and apparently they are close to acquiring Odorizzi.

Kuma is good, but has had injury problems in the past which might not have been the best for LA with guys like Ryu and Anderson already there. Trading for Odorizzi and signing one of them might not make up for losing Greinke but it'd give them 2 solid starters. Kazmir is someone I was thinking the Padres would go after with their lack of LHP, but it seems like Preller is focused on trading for players and not signing them.

He could still sign a lesser deal, which wouldn't be bad news. He had a 2.17 ERA in his last 7 starts last season. Friedman and Co. seem to be pretty good at getting top pitching prospects for relatively nothing while keeping their own blue-chippers.

Giants really helped themselves in free agency this year. Now it will be a battle between the Giants, D'Backs and Dodgers.

Who gives a shit how much they paid for Samardzija. There is no salary cap and if he helps the team win, money should not be an object. Whether Cueto and Samardzija boom or bust, at least the Giants are trying to win.

Are they still on tap to get Chapman?

I think that fell through when the incident about him and his GF came out, I guess they could still trade for him.

And for some reason free agents want to sign with them all of a sudden. A very knowledgeable poster here once told me that can't happen.

I never bought that nonsense. It was just the Giants being cheap. I was stunned when they opened that cob web-covered wallet and signed two very nice additions to the rotation. Both have big question marks but you cannot fault the Giants for going out and trying to get the best guys still available.

I hope so. He's good and I don't want him anywhere near the Dodgers..

Meh, they could have easily signed him to a 1 year deal, they could have easily out-bid the Giants on Cueto. Clearly the Dodgers aren't that desperate.

Making your team better = desperation, got it. Thanks for clearing that up.

Never said the Giants were desperate. Just saying, obviously the Dodgers don't feel they are hurting, contrary to what Giants fans believe.

So, do YOU believe the dogs have nearly enough pitching to be a contender?

To contend in the NL West? Yes, it's basically the same rotation minus Greinke and the Dodgers pulled Bolsinger and Anderson out of their ass last year to make up for Ryu and McCarthy getting injured. Enough pitching to be assured of the division title next year? No, but there is still lots of time left, and lots of time to strengthen the pitching staff. I see the NL West being a 3-way dog fight next season.
